The exhibition displays the life of Merton Priory from its founding in 1114 until the present day. It tells the story of many important events that took place in the Priory, where both the only English Pope, Adrian IV and Saint Thomas Becket were educated. Twenty years after Magna Carta, in 1236, Parliament met at Merton Priory to prepare the written parliamentary law in the form of the eleven chapters of the Statute of Merton, the very first Statute of England.
Entry is free.
Looks like some interesting projects are afoot around the area. This is from South Wimbledon tube station in time for the Merton Arts Festival. Have a visit before it goes.
If you see something that looks like a) and not b) c) or d) around the town, drop us a message and we’ll see what we can do. 😉
This is a gathering of local churches to celebrate the re-opening of Merton Priory. All warmly invited to join priests, ministers, leaders and worshippers gathered from the whole religious community of the borough.
Ecumenism refers to efforts by Christians of different Church traditions to develop closer relationships and better understandings. The term is also often used to refer to efforts towards the visible and organic unity of different Christian denominations in some form. Everyone of any religion (or secular outlook) are welcome.
New street signs. Thank you Merton Council.😊
What links a supermarket, the Magna Carta, St Barts Hospital, William the Conquerer, Parliament, a Roman road, Oxford University, Wimbledon and Henry VIII? Produced by Bobbin Productions ; featuring John Hawks and Charlie Shakespeare. Funded by Heritage Lottery Fund. Please like and share!
If you’ve been past the Chapter House you’ve probably see the building work going on outside. The external work has now been completed and yesterday evening John Hawks premiered a Heritage Lottery Funded educational video aimed at school children. We’ll be releasing the video very soon. Watch this space.
A very happy birthday to our vice chair of trustees. Mr John Hawks. Esq. Have a great one, John. We’ll see you at the grand opening. 🎂
