Observational Drawing with Nesta Fitzgerald⠀ ⠀ "To draw what one sees without prejudice takes something very like courage.” Matisse ⠀ ⠀ On this course run by illustrator Nesta Fitzgerald on Saturday 29 June students will explore Messums’ medieval barn and the surrounding countryside through the process of observational drawing. ⠀... ⠀ Using the barn as a focus students will take time to draw what they see and importantly develop ways of imparting what they find, considering the barn’s aesthetic, its function and why we are drawn to it. ⠀ ⠀ This one-day course will aim to develop confidence in drawing outside – enabling those to deal with and embrace the challenge of changing light and weather.⠀ ⠀ Saturday 29 June, various times available throughout the day. For more info or tickets click on the link in our bio to be re-directed to our What's On webpage.⠀ ⠀ Part of our 'In Focus Forthnight: Architecture' series of exhibitions and events 15 - 30 June.⠀ ⠀ #drawing #drawingcourse #illustration #messumswiltshire #learnsomethingnew #wiltshire #salisbury #architecture #architectural ⠀ ⠀

On Saturday 15 June we are delighted to open the UK debut exhibition by the artist and award-winning filmmaker Daniel Agdag.
Daniel Agdag is an artist and filmmaker based in Melbourne, Australia whose practice sits at the nexus of sculpture and motionography. He creates highly detailed sculptural pieces that have been described as ‘architectural in form, whimsical and antiquated in nature and inconceivably intricate’ and Messums Wiltshire is delighted to present a debut UK so...lo exhibition in our Long Gallery this June. (A selection of his work will go on to our London gallery to be shown in July.)
As part of our search for the best makers in the world - and in an era of CGI - Daniel Agdag takes the time to physically make his work with cardboard being his primary medium. Drawn to its utilitarian origins and monochromatic presentation, he creates a paradox of fragility and strength with structures that resemble architectural forms and machines.
He has exhibited solo shows in Melbourne and New York and been presented at several international art fairs: Melbourne Art Fair; Sydney Contemporary; Art Central Hong Kong; VOLTA Basel; Art Fair Tokyo. His work is held in private collections in the United States, Japan, Hong Kong, Australia and Europe.
Exhibition opens Saturday 15 June Preview: Friday 14 June Film screening and talk: Saturday 15 June, 11:30am Click on the link in our bio to secure a place at the preview or talk.

Talk & Supper Club: Friday 17 May, 6:30pm⠀ Richard Ormond CBE discusses the life and work of John Singer Sargent.⠀ A relative of Sargent's, Richard began collating his vast collection of works, a task that took many years to complete.⠀ John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) was the greatest Anglo-American portrait painter of his generation. In 1907, at the height of his powers, and to the consternation of fashionable society, he gave up his portrait practice in oils. Thereafter he o...ffered his patrons portraits in charcoal that he could accomplish in a sitting of two to three hours. In the last two decades of his life he drew more than seven hundred and fifty personalities on both sides of the Atlantic, in a bravura style as spirited and characterful as his portraits in oil. ⠀ ⠀ Richard Ormond has curated many major exhibitions on the works of Sargent in recent years and he is the co-author of the monumental Sargent Catalogue Raisonné, 9 volumes, Yale University Press, 1998-2016. He is a former deputy-director of the National Portrait Gallery.⠀ ⠀ Tickets at: https://bit.ly/2DHbvqS or click on the link in our bio to be re-directed to our What's On webpage.⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #portrait #johnsingersargent #oilpainting #gallerytalk #messumswiltshire #wiltshire #supperclub #portraitartist #nationalportraitgallery ⠀ ⠀

Exhibition: Jordi Raga⠀ 'Between Order and Chaos Trilogy'⠀ Until 9 June 2019⠀ ⠀ “My reasons to carve are purely existential. I realise that I need order to express my views on existence and what makes us human. I want to say something truthful about the nature of life by using stone, my hands and my body. I want to probe the mysteries of being alive, the possibility of transcending the self, the limits of communication, as well the cultural alienation of living abroad. The ne...ed to leave ‘something behind’ and desire to become part of something bigger also plays a part.”⠀ ⠀ Photo by @steverussellstudios⠀ ⠀ #sculpture #artexhibition #messumswiltshire #makingisthinking #contemporaryart #stonecarving #artist #stone #wiltshire #abstractart #artcollector ⠀ ⠀

Exhibition: John Walker⠀ Until 9 June ⠀ ⠀ ‘I’ve always been interested in what you may call talking with the brush- that’s something inherent in great painting’ he says. ‘The way the artist kind of talks himself through a space or a distinctive form. It was there in the paintings I admired, that distinctive touch which you see in a Chardin for example and which makes you gasp when you see the beauty of it.’⠀ ⠀... #painting #johnwalkerpainter #messumswiltshire #artist #contemporaryart #abstractart #abstractpainting #wiltshire #artexhibition #artgallery #art #artist #artcollection #artcollector⠀ ⠀ ⠀

ARTISTS TALK & SUPPER: with expressionist landscape painter David Tress⠀ Friday 10 May, 6:30pm⠀ ⠀ Following his sell-out London show at our Cork Street gallery, painter David Tress joins us in Wiltshire for one of our popular talk and supper evenings. David applies his signature expressionist style to his local landscapes in Pembrokeshire which have remained a core subject. He also paints regularly in other parts of Britain and Europe, particularly the west of Scotland and th...e Tarn area of the South of France as well as a series based in Wiltshire which we are currently being shown in the Long Gallery.⠀ ⠀ Widely regarded as one of Britain’s most inventive landscape painters, Tress moves beyond a landscape’s immediate appearance and evokes a state of mind: a sense of self in relation to place, its primordial history, and the wild, cyclical rhythms of the seasons and elements. Expressing a visceral response, his paintings thus establish a dialogue between topography and abstraction.⠀ ⠀ There is the option to stay for supper after the talk where David will be our guest. ⠀ ⠀ Last few tickets available at: https://bit.ly/2vHE8jl or click on the link in our bio to be redirected to our What's On webpage.⠀ ⠀ #painting #landscapepainting #gallerytalk #supperclub #messumswiltshire #davidtress #expressionism #expressionistart #artisttalk #wiltshire #messrestaurant #artcollectors #contemporaryart⠀ ⠀

CURRENT EXHIBITION: Jordi Raga Frances ⠀ 'Between Order and Chaos: The Pendular State'⠀ ⠀ For Jordi a stone block equals a limit a finite possibility and a form that orders his ideas. Through a practice that places importance on technical accuracy, right angles and straight planes, his experimental sculptures attempt to strike the right balance between tension, order and structure versus chaos, surprise and irrationality. ⠀ This new body of work is shown against the dramatic ...backdrop of the thirteenth century barn at Messums Wiltshire: a raw space whose unique dimensions and construction techniques will provide an inspiring architecture within which to showcase materiality.⠀ ⠀ Until 9 June⠀ ⠀ Photo by @steverussellstudios⠀ ⠀ #contemporaryart #stonecarving #sculpture #messumswiltshire #makingisthinking #wiltshire #artcollector #gardendesign #interiordesign ⠀ ⠀
