Artist Talk - Crystal Visions: Crystal in Film and Popular Culture 13 June, 17:30 - 19:00 Artist Karen David, whose work is within our Liquid Crystal Display exhibition, joins us to talk about her practice which examines ideas of mysticism and subculture through a range of media which she employs as aesthetic-shorthand for ‘New Age’ ideas. In this talk, David explores today’s love of crystals; from crystal landscapes and balls to crystal as memory data and a power source. Free, come join us.

In our Liquid Crystal Display exhibition, closing 16 June 2019:
Lise Autogena and Joshua Portway, Denmark, 1964; England, 1967 Kuannetsuit; Kvanefield 2016 Uranium ore and single-channel video, colour, sound, 29 mins
... The video draws attention to the social and ecological implication of extracting natural minerals. It is a portrait of Narsaq, a town located in Southern Greenland for generations, Narsaq has preserved small-scale farming and fishing and hunting industries. Today they are divided over a controversial proposal to open a uranium mine in the nearby Kavanefield mountains. Greenland is a former Danish colony (until 1953) and remains a territory of Denmark. The mining project is seen by some as a lucrative business that would give Greenland greater financial independence from Denmark, while others point to its environmental disruption and destruction. Working with our partners this week on our #newmappingsofeurope project. This two year project, is a collaborative project of four art and cultural institutions from Serbia, Slovenia, Austria and the United Kingdom, which generates knowledge about migrants’ cultural heritage in Europe and make cultural and art institutions more accessible to new communities locally and settled migrants.
At MIMA, through our Human Library, we have been recording migrant stories across the year and are digitally mapping our journeys.
This project has been funded with support from the European Commission,This project has been funded with support from the European Commission, Creative Europe Programme. More info on the project can be found here: http://www.visitmima.com/wha…/single/ne w-mappings-of-europe/

Lisa Walker, Pendant, 2012
On show within our Liquid Crystal Display, this pendant is made from pounamu (also known as greenstone) which is found on New Zealand's South Island. Pounamu is a protected natural resource and revered in Māori culture for its cultural and spiritual value.
Artist Lisa Walker uses the stone to reference New Zealand identity and the influence of Māori culture on her life and practice. In Māori culture, pounamu is fashioned into adornments or tools... and weapons.
Pounamu objects are passed through family lines and offer the wearer a spiritual and physical connection to their ancestors. The simple cotton thread recalls Hei-tiki (neck pendants) made by Māori artisans. Pendant, draws to the surface historic sacred practices of infusing earthly materials with otherworldly meanings.

Art Tile Installation at MIMA Dementia Action Week, 20 May – Sunday 26 May 2019
We are celebrating Dementia Action Week with an Art Tile Installation at MIMA with our wonderful Creative Age group. We hold weekly sessions and run a dementia-friendly programme which is inclusive, friendly and focused on people's imagination and ideas. Our approach is about what individuals can do now, in the moment, with friends, family and caregivers through singing, dancing, laughing and cre...ating art in a safe space.
We commissioned the group to produce a series of tiles decorated with colourful college to create an installation in the accessible toilets on the second floor. Every tile is a one-off composition by a member of Creative Age.
Inspired by a project by Granby Workshop as a starting point, Creative Age has gone on to make their own style of tiles. Granby Workshop is a social enterprise in Toxteth, Liverpool, set up by art/architecture group Assemble and residents and went on to win the art-world Turner Prize. Using everyday materials to make process-led products, in 2016 MIMA collected a series of product and their prototypes which are now part of the Middlesbrough Collection.
