We're only in June and we already have our 2020 season in place! We hope there's something for everyone:
February - Di and Viv and Rose by Amelia Bullmore, directed by Julia Armstrong - a warm and funny play about female friendship. Aged 18, three women join forces at university. Life is fun. Living is intense. Together they feel unassailable. Crackling with wisdom and wit, the play is a humorous and thoughtful exploration of friendship's impact on life and life's impact on f...riendship.
May - Separate Tables by Terence Rattigan, directed by David Downing - Separate Tables consists of two one-act plays, Table by the Window and Table Number Seven. Both plays take place in a hotel in Bournemouth where we meet its semi-permanent residents. In Table by the Window, a down-at-the-heels journalist is confronted by his ex-wife, a former model who provoked him to the violent act that sent him to prison, destroying his future. Still in love, they nevertheless go through another terrible scene. In Table Number Seven, an army colonel finds solace with a spinster over the objections of her ruthless, domineering mother until a sordid scandal threatens to drive them apart.
July (in our Studio) - I Thought I Heard a Rustling by Alan Plater, directed by Jim Woods - An ex-miner turned poet is appointed writer-in-residence at Eastwood branch library. Ellen, senior librarian, soon realizes the feckless but charming Geordie is not what he seems. Despite this she finds him highly entertaining, much to the disgust of Nutley, an earnest young man who covets the writer-in-residence role. These three find themselves an unlikely but united strike group when the Libraries sub-committee proposes demolishing the library.
October - God of Carnage by Yesmena Reza, directed by Mary Bell - What happens when two sets of parents’ meet up to deal with the unruly behaviour of their children? A calm and rational debate between grown-ups about the need to teach kids how to behave properly? Or a hysterical night of name-calling, tantrums and tears before bedtime? Boys will be boys, but the adults are usually worse – much worse.
