Although now rarely-performed, "Andrea Chénier has gifted us some of the best-known and challenging arias in the repertoire, including "Un dì all'azzurro spazio", "Come un bel dì di maggio" and "La mamma morta". This is music not to be missed! www.midsummeropera.org.uk

Our cast includes John Upperton, Zoë South, Andrew Mayor and Anna Loveday in a semi-staged production, with the Midsummer Opera Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, conducted by David Roblou and directed by Lynne McAdam. Our next production is Giordano's 'Andrea Chénier'. Based on the life of poet André Chenier who was executed during the French Revolution, this piece is a cornerstone of the 'verismo' opera movement. We welcome back Stephen Holloway who is singing Banquo. Stephen studied singing at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and at the Britten-Pears School. His operatic work has included roles and covers for Scottish Opera, English National Opera, English Touring Opera, Covent Garden Festival, Royal Opera House, European Chamber Opera, Chelsea Opera Group, New Sussex Opera and many others.
Introducing John Upperton, who is singing Macduff. John has sung a wide range of spinto and dramatic roles, and when not singing Siegfried and the like, is also Assistant Director and Chorus Master of Midsummer Opera.
Less than a week until opening night! We perform at the beautiful St John's, Waterloo, SE1 8TY - a space that allows the audience to experience the music and drama up close. See www.midsummeropera.org.uk for further details.
We are delighted to welcome back Zoe South in the role of Lady Macbeth. She is celebrating her 10th year as an MSO principal, and in the decade since she first sang with us has sung two complete Ring cycles as Brünnhilde, Isolde, both Cassandre and Didon in Les Troyens, and has made her Strauss role debuts as Elektra, Ariadne, and Die Färberin, and for MSO, Leonora (Fidelio), Giorgetta (Tabarro), Minnie (Fanciulla del West), and the title role in La Gioconda. She is looking forward to returning in 2019 as Maddalena (Andrea Chenier), and Madame Lidoine (Dialogues des Carmelites).
We are delighted to introduce our Macbeth - David Durham. David has had a successful career as an actor in theatre and TV. He trained principally as a classical musican which also brought him to the West End with many leading roles in musicals. Ultimately for him it is opera, with its synthesis of drama and classical music where he sought his most rewarding challenges. Previous roles include Don Giovanni, Scarpia and Germont Père - and it is now Macbeth: very much proving to be the Actor/Musician's 'Dream Role'. Verdi himself could not have agreed more!
Verdi wrote for a chorus of witches: we're using nine soloists! Want to know what our witches have been plotting? You can find out on 16 and 18 November, St John's Waterloo, SE1 8TY. Tickets are available at www.midsummeropera.org.uk
Did you know... There are two versions of Verdi's Macbeth? Verdi wrote the original in 1847, but revised it in 1865. We are performing the 1865 version, for which Verdi wrote - amongst other things - a new aria for Lady Macbeth. This is one not to be missed! Tickets available at: www.midsummeropera.org.uk
Our next production is Verdi's Macbeth, the first of Verdi's Shakespearian operas. Power, ambition, guilt - all are explored in this masterpiece.
