What is the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS)?

The Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS) was introduced by the Government on the 6th April 2006 to assist serving and former serving personnel who have been injured as a result of their service in the armed forces. Prior to the introduction of this scheme, the only course of action available to military personnel was to sue the Ministry of Defence (MOD) for negligence and it is well known that the cost of such legal action was expensive, stressful for the Claimants, and costly. Very costly!

What makes the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS) a sensible alternative is that a claimant does not need to instruct a law firm to prove negligence by the Ministry of Defence (MOD). This saves time, legal costs, and speeds up the process whereby the Claimant receives an award of compensation for their illness, injury, or condition, within months - not years!
