Uneven shoulders can also be the result of an imbalance somewhere else in the body.
Think of it as a domino effect. For example, if you hurt your ankle or hip, it will cause you to bring your body out of alignment as you adjust to how you hold and move your body. Playing sports and certain injuries can cause muscular imbalances, especially in the upper body.
Other common causes of uneven shoulders include: вҖў poor posture вҖў sedentary lifestyle вҖў uneven hips вҖў pinched nerve вҖў flat feet вҖў osteoporosis вҖў shoulder injuries вҖў weak or tight muscles вҖў overuse or misuse of the shoulders вҖў incorrect sleeping position or only sleeping on one side вҖў using one side of the body to hold objects
If you have uneven shoulders you may experience neck, shoulder, and lower back pain, especially if you have other imbalances in the body. You may feel tightness and pulling in the shoulder thatвҖҷs higher. Your shoulders may be rounded and your head may not be in line with your pelvis.
How to treat uneven shoulders
There are many ways to treat uneven shoulders.
Regular therapeutic massages help to relieve muscle tension and increase flexibility. Make an appointment with a massage therapist who specializes in myofascial release. These specialties focus on bringing the body into balance and alignment.
ItвҖҷs a good idea to engage in regular exercise and participate in sports as much as possible. Yoga, swimming, and rowing can help to strengthen and realign your body. Martial arts such as tai chi may be beneficial as well.
Make it a practice to check in with your posture continually throughout the day. It may be helpful to use a mirror. Become aware of your posture not only while youвҖҷre standing or sitting, but as youвҖҷre completing your usual activities. Start using your nondominant arm as much as you can to balance out the workload.
Incorporating relaxation techniques into your routine can help you to relieve stress, tension, and tightness in the body. This may include meditation, breathing techniques, or anything else that helps you to relax.

So what is the difference between the various types of massage?
Multiple types of massage can be used to treat a client in the clinic.
The SKILL is deciding what MIX of techniques is best suited to an individual client needs. A client suffering from stress needs a different form of massage to someone with a frozen shoulder. These in turn requires a different treatment plan to an athlete who wants to improve performance. In some ways there are as many different types of massage as there are clients. So, bearing this in mind, we can define the different types of massage recognising that each represents just one string to the therapistвҖҷs bow at Mind Bodhi and Sole Sports therapist I work with all types to offer a fully holistic treatment.
Sports massage Sports massage is designed to assist in correcting problems and imbalances in soft tissue that are caused from repetitive and strenuous physical activity and trauma. The application of sports massage, prior to and after exercise, may enhance performance, aid recovery and prevent injury.
Deep tissue massage Deep tissue massage is a type of massage aimed at the deeper tissue structures of the muscle and fascia.Getting through the layers of muscle is more subtle than you might imagine and requires persistence and coaxing as well as firm pressure. Just digging in demonstrates inexperience or a lack of training. Many people like a deep massage as the pain produces large amounts of endorphins (the bodyвҖҷs own painkiller) that gives a natural high.
Soft tissue release Soft tissue release (or STR massage) is a technique of assisted stretching of muscle fibres, tendon and fascia. STR involves repeatedly and quickly stretching small areas of the soft tissue. Precise pressure is applied to part of the muscle which is then moved to achieve a very specific stretch. An interesting and popular form of therapy, especially useful if adhesions are present in the tissue.
Trigger Point Therapy A trigger point (TrP) is a small area of muscle that is exquisitely painful and tender to pressure. When pressed it produces a recognisable and reproducible pattern of referred pain away from the site of the trigger point. We use TrP therapy to get rid of these nasty little blighters.
Neuromuscular Massage As well as TrP release this also includes the very effective Muscle Energy Techniques (MET) and Positional Release. Neuromuscular techniques are a recommended and powerful skill set for any Remedial masseur.
