A series of five weekly practical workshops introduces participants to the highest form of Islamic Art ‘Hüsnühat’ – the art of traditional Arabic Calligraphy according to the Ottoman School of writing taught by Master Calligrapher Gulnaz Mahboob, learned from her teacher, Turkish Grand Master Hasan Celebi:
"To write the letters with love and devotion were central to his teaching. He was able to take a basic tool like a qalam (pen) and mak...e the letters breath life and light."
Gulnaz Mahboob is an U.K based classically trained master calligrapher and teacher. Gulnaz started studying under world-renowned Turkish grand master, Hasan Celebi. In 2012, Gulnaz Mahboob received the coveted ijazah or certification from her teacher. She holds a MA in Social Anthropology from SOAS, University of London and a BA in Communication studies with Graphic Arts & Illustration from Anglia Ruskin University. Gulnaz currently teaches calligraphy at various institutions and privately. She recently donated one of her works to the Cambridge Mosque Project, a project designed to raise funds for Cambridge, England’s first eco-mosque.
'Islamic Calligraphy is not solely art. This is just one aspect. The combination of traditional training and sacred letters allows you, should you wish, to align your busy lives to a steady peaceful pace. It is a creative experience that can help regain peace, clarity & mindfulness. This experience can appeal to anyone from wounded souls, stressed out individuals and of course artists!' (Gulnaz Mahboob)
These workshops are open to people of all abilities and backgrounds. No previous understanding or knowledge of Arabic is required.
The workshops are free. However, there will be a small fee for materials.

MKIAC's Resident Artist Maryam Smit addressed challenges such as isolation, 9/11, discrimination, education and hatecrime for being 'different'. MKIAC creates projects that emphasise on dialogue & creativity by facilitating contemperary & traditional islamic art as a platform to engage with all diverse communities. IWD2019 gives hope for the future, that as women, we can overcome preejudices. It is vital to engage together, as barriers are needed to be broken down, for the benefit of all, including our women and future generations. #balanceforbetter #iwd2019 #MKIACIWD2019
