Due to a couple of last minute cancellations we have space for residential volunteers in the next few weeks. Please email us at info@monktonwyldcourt.org if you'd like to come and spend a fortnight with us. Work includes the garden, grounds, farm, house and kitchen in return for accommodation and some pretty good vegetarian food, with dairy produce from our Jersey cows and fresh produce from our garden.

Toby Fairlove, yurt-maker for over 25 years, is running his annual yurt building course this year at Monkton Wyld Court. This 10 day course starts on 25th May, with limited places available.
We will be making a 14ft yurt frame out of locally sourced coppiced sweet chestnut and ash. There will be a small amount of "class room" theory work throughout each day but the course will be predominantly "hands on" it will cover everything you need to know about how to make your own bea...utiful coppiced yurt frame.
Some of the skills we will be learning are; how to source your own wood sustainably, tool sharpening, cleaving wood, steam bending, knotting up, some basic jointing techniques and the use of draw knives, side axes and spoke shaves as well as how to use other more common carpentry tools. No previous experience necessary, just a willingness to work and to learn.
The yurt is eventually destined for the Pikpa refugee camp on the island of Lesvos in Greece. There is an option to make your own yurt wheel/crown to take home with you at an additional cost.
Tobias has been running courses at home and abroad since 2006, he brings a quarter of a century's experience of working with yurts to the course. His work has featured on the BBC Culture Show, Tents: the Beginning of Architecture and recently BBC Spotlight covered his journey to Greece delivering one of his yurts. He is currently writing a book about yurts. He lives in Devon with his wife, has 4 children and has recently become a grandfather.

This action-packed weekend course is run by Dorset straw bale builder Phil Christopher, of Huff and Puff Construction. Phil believes passionately in bringing all the wonderful benefits of straw bale building to a wider audience, and in addition to his work for Huff and Puff, he is on the board of Straw-bale Building UK (SBUK), promoting straw bale building and best practice in the UK.
Your weekend starts with an introductory session on the Friday evening, followed by two days... of both theory and hands-on building of a load-bearing straw bale room.
No previous building experience is required! What you’ll learn on this course should give you enough knowledge and confidence to start your own project.
The course fee is £250, including 2 nights accommodation and meals.
