Aquaponics The Need & Opportunity
Local Food Security is a factor that becomes ever more important. A convergence of factors has made food security one of the most important global issues. An increasing population wants a more varied diet, but is trying to grow more food on less land with limited access to water, all the time facing increased costs for fertiliser, and fuel for storage and transport. The world’s population is predicted to hit 9 Billion by 2050, up from today’s... total of nearly 6.8 Billion, and with it food demand is predicted to increase substantially. (Sasson A. 2012)
Large Scale aquaponics systems are complex, employing mostly vertical farming architecture, designed with specific parameters and high overheads, which places it financially out of reach for the small commercial farmer or SME. In comparison, the complexity scaling up from a backyard hobby scale aquaponics system to small-scale commercial also requires a level of professional design, technically beyond the reach of the small farmer. Commercial systems focus on maximum productivity, based on reliable failsafe systems at the lowest CAPEX and OPEX models for that system.
We studied the availability and design maturity of different systems and found there is an absence of professionally designed turnkey systems.
