During an eye exam #gonioscopy is used to evaluate the internal drainage system of the eye, this is also referred to as the anterior chamber angle.
At #Moorfields we are running a one day intensive course for #hospital and community based #optometrists who are interested in refreshing their knowledge of gonioscopy.
The #course will be delivered by leading optometrists and will include a light lunch and refreshments.

If you’ve been prescribed both eye and ointment drops, check out our handy tips on administering these vital medicines.
1. If you need to use eye drop(s) and eye ointment, use the eye drops first and then wait five minutes before using the eye ointment. 2. Check the expiry date on your eye ointment and wash your hands before opening the tube. 3. Lie down or sit down and tilt your head back.... 4. Make a fist with one hand and use your knuckles to pull your lower eyelid downwards. Place your other hand with the eye ointment tube onto your knuckles with the nozzle facing downwards towards your eye. 5. Look up and squeeze about 1cm of the ointment along the inside of the lower eyelid, making sure the nozzle does not touch the eye, eyelashes or eyelid. 6. Close your eye for a moment, and then blink a few times to spread the ointment around the inside of the eye.

There are various #retinal diseases that can affect a person’s vision. These include age-related macular degeneration (AMD), retinitis pigmentosa and diabetic retinopathy.
Diabetic retinopathy is caused by high levels of blood sugar which damage the retina. If left without treatment it can lead to #blindness. People who have diabetes Type 1 or 2 are at risk of developing the disease and having high cholesterol and blood pressure increases this risk.
If you’re an #ophthalmologist who would like to improve your understanding of the pathogenesis, aetiology, diagnostic criteria and management of medical retina disorders, please visit our website to find out more about our medical retina #observership, where you can observe our world leading consultants in action. https://bit.ly/2HmJnbl

Condition of the week: amblyopia
Amblyopia is a condition where one eye is used less than the other. Rarely, as a result of a strong glasses prescription, amblyopia may affect both eyes.
Amblyopia can be caused by:... • a turn in the eye (a strabismus or squint) • a difference in the glasses prescription between the two eyes • an obstacle blocking visual stimulation to the eye, such as a droopy eyelid or cataract (cloudy lens); the amblyopia might persist even after the obstacle has been removed
Amblyopia can be treated by glasses or a patch covering the good eye which will stimulate the weaker eye. Most cases of amblyopia are treatable. However, the success of treatment is dependent on the initial level of vision your child has in the bad eye, their age and the level of co-operation with treatment.

Mary Jane #Seacole was a British-Jamaican woman who embodied the definition of a #leader. After the War Office refused her permission to travel to the Crimea and heal wounded soldiers, she funded her own travel and went on to do just that. Through her courageousness and #leadership, Mary Seacole inspired many people within and outside of #healthcare. The Mary Seacole Programme was named in her honour.
The programme lasts for 6 months and combines face-to-face and online learning, aiming to develop the skills of first time and aspiring managers.

With many patients having problems with their sight, aiming eye drops at the correct angle or squeezing plastic containers can be difficult. In some cases, patients do not realise that the technique they are using isn’t working. This can result in medication not working effectively and could lead to further complications.
Moorfields’ pharmacy team launched the #Knowyourdrops campaign to ensure that patients get the support that they need.
We not only provide support to patie...nts but, with our KnowYourDrops Study Day, we work with #doctors, #nurses, #carers and #optometrists to ensure they know how best to help their patients.

The Met Office has predicted that temperatures will remain high this week. Heatwaves can be dangerous, especially for very young or very old people and people with chronic diseases.
Water is available in Moorfields clinics for free to all patients.

There's not a another hospital like Moorfields... The Centre of Excellence for all aspects of eye care... Both Paediatric and Retinal Care departments have looked after my son this year, and I cannot fault the standard of professionalism and compassion to my boy... Thank you from the bottom of my heart...

User

My husband a Squamous cell carcinoma which had got quite large and was referred to Ms Claire Daniel and her team. Although we had to travel from the Midlands to London we were treated with great courtesy by everyone each time we arrived.

If you are lucky enough to be referred to Moorfields you will receive excellent attention.

User

My daughter has been seen by the team at Homerton since we was 18 months old. Today, just shortly after her 8th birthday she is being discharged and we just want to say a massive thank you to everyone that followed her through the years. Everyone has been very professional, caring and patient. Children and concerned mummys might not be the best patients but we've always got none less than 5 star treatment every time. Thank you so much for everything

User

Mr Andrews and his team are the best. That’s why I come all the way from Worthing West Sussex for them to look after my eyes

User

Moorfields Eye Hospital is still a brilliant hospital. I did my ophthalmic nursing training in the late 1950's at Moorfields, and loved every minute of it. Such a happy place to be, and have never forgotten it. Still have my Moorfields Nurses' Training School brochure after all these years. I am proud to have been a part of this wonderful hospital.

User

Moorefield Eye Hospital, friendly, staff , they looked after you well and kept you updated when your turn will be up for your op. Rooms are clean and tidy .

User

Monday I went into A & E at this hospital, from that moment I was treated as an individual, my needs listened to and understood.

I came back yesterday (Tuesday) to have treatment for a detached retina, the level of service, understanding and treatment I received were exemplary.

Fantastic staff, doctors, and surgeons who are easily worth double what they are paid for the level of care and dedication they showed to all.

Thank you.

User

I wouldn’t say I loved going there (I could think of better things to do on my Sunday) .. more a necessity .. definitely a 5 due to the service you get .. it was a very busy morning when I attended!!

User

I was referred by my GP to Moorfields as I was in a lot of pain with my eye and it was red raw. From the moment I arrived the efficiency of the staff was excellent. I registered and within 15 minutes I had an eye test done by the nurse. The doctor saw me within 2 hours although there was a 2:50minute waiting time. The doctor removed the foreign body from my eye whilst explaining everything he was doing. He was jovial and put me right at ease as he knew I was terrified. I can’t thank Moorfields enough. Highly recommend the hospital.

User

I recently had my first cataract operated on and will need the second done soon. The care I received was second to none and help was provided when I needed it, I have mobility issues so needed more help than might be expected of someone who is able bodied. Have no qualms about getting the second eye done.

User

I had surgery here yesterday and I can honestly say the staff have been amazing. Friendly, attentive and the staff on Sedgwick ward and the Observation Ward were lovely and had a great sense of humour. It was almost like being in a hotel rather than a hospital

User

I came first time in A&E for my eyes cataract Problem after operation 9pm approximately & 12pm roughly was Seen by Doctor but he Seen My Problem Properly I’m happy

User

I will have appointment letter near time in the post for and it will be in December 2018 and see every 6 months.

User

Great service from warm, friendly staff. Thank you to all, Sister Kennedy Prof. Webster, Monica, the imaging guys, reception desk, and the vampire lady with the needle.

User

User

Best in the world! Very friendly staff and knows what they are talking about.

User

Best Eye Hospital, best Staff Best Dr... Best Nurses especially Filipino Nurses Amazing ...good service and friendly really good job

User

Although I waited in A & E for a long time, the Dr I saw was excellent and very thorough. Excellent treatment! All the Drs I have seen there (3) over the past couple of months have all actually been very nice. I hope this continues along with my ongoing treatment!

User

Visited A&E on Friday night. Finally checked in at 1am. Sadly there was only one doctor on duty and 28 people waiting. It doesn’t take a genius to work out that we were in for a long wait. 8 hours for the doctor. 1 hour for meds. By the time we saw the doctor the morning shift had started so we moved a bit quicker. Brilliant Doctor, amazing treatment but a long tiring wait.

User

The only gripe we've got about this hospital are the clinic receptionists. Smiles and warm greetings cost nothing and could make nervous patients feel so much more at ease.

They hardly make any eye contact and look like the wish they were somewhere else .

User

Great eye hospital . Efficient, friendly staff , hospital has great amenities. They actually seem to care about the experience their patients have . Thank you , you are all doing a fantastic job . I feel safe in your hands .

User

Attended today, a Saturday with my daughter who has a rare eye condition (should have been in two days time but the hospital cancelled it). We live in the Cotswolds so had a fair distance to travel. Arrived at the hospital and had exemplary care from the first person we spoke to right through to seeing the Dr. We loved 'John Jerry' who did my daughters scans - he was great at explaining every thing he was going to do. Sadly for us we have to come back as her existing condition is causing a few eye brows to be raised but we will come back knowing what a fab team there is there and nothing seems too much trouble. In today's society of slating the NHS I hope the managers in charge see this comment and give praise where it is due!

User

Attended Bedford and London in the last 48 hours and patient care was a top priority. Made me feel important and reassured thank you. 🤗

User

Had to attend Moorefields A&E tonight and despite the staff being totally over stretched and working flat out, they all remained professional and I can’t thank them enough for their help. Xxx

User

When my daughter consultant ophthalmologist has discharged her from clinic. Due to not attending and rebooking three times with reasons. It good to know they think that falling on ice and having take my youngest daughter to A&E wasn’t trying to get to hospital. That her mother being ill after operation all so not enough reason for not attending and rebooking. Accusing me of not wanting to attend because it is too far. Glad it is ok for you to have rude staff, Cancel and rebook or having wait 3 and half to be seen. Then we get a parking ticket because we went over our time not moving the car to somewhere else. If 5£ an hour wasn’t enough. I guess all about funding then my child health. Thank you very much for being so understanding by letting us down!

User

I have regularly visited moorfields over the last 35 years as I have eye problem and have always been told any problems come straight to A&E

I had a problem yesterday and took the 2 hour journey to A&E on arrival I was told there was a 2 to 3 hour wait. After waiting 21/2 hours I saw the nurse who said I now need to see the doctor. We were all then told at 7.30 in the evening it will be another 5 hour wait before seeing a doctor, there were 5 doctors on duty and at 9.30 it would reduce down to 2 doctors.

I left after 4 hours and said I would try and self medicate . And try and get my next appointment moved forward.

Not happy with the service.

User

Turned up for an appointment to find it had been cancelled but no one thought it necessary to inform me. Took half a day off work and rescheduled meetings ,etc for nothing. Why does the NHS think that as a taxpayer who funds this charade, my time is less important than yours? Staff offered no apology, in fact the stony faced foreigner at the desk said "I've told you it's cancelled and it's not my fault". Outrageous lack of professionalism.

User

The clinical services are very good, but WHY WHY WHY won't they answer their phones? The admin for some of the external appointments is chaotic. When I'm given an appointment at the Mile End Hospital Bancroft Road they ALWAYS change it. They give a number to phone if it's not convenient. BUT They NEVER answer it - I'm not surprised people miss appointments without notification. I would love to donate money to Moorfeilds Eye Hospital but given that the ADMIN staff are rude and stone face or unhelpful, I might give the money to another charity. Moorfeilds could be a great organisation if they employed people who actually wanted to work for them, not staff who look like they are doing you a favour or would rather be doing something else.

User

The Medical Retinal Department has a policy of withholding crucial information linked to vision loss. It won't tell patients about the existence of Charles Bonnet Syndrome. This is when the visual sub-cortex produces hallucinations as a direct reaction to sight loss. If you have this happen to you, then it's very easy to suppose that you might be going mad. It's for this reason that the syndrome goes underreported. All the blind people that I have spoken to, believe that this information should be given to people. My message to Moorfields Eye Hospital is a simple one. How dare you play God with this psychological well-being of your patients!
