Congratulations to Paul and Melanie on their wedding day at Moot Hall today.
Thank you all for your like’s and share’s to the April fool’s day post on Monday. It was of course a bit of fun. It should however be explained that there has not been a tunnel discovered. The image is of a very similar brick tunnel to the Moot Hall’s exercise yard passage, and actually belongs to a 500 year old tunnel discovered under the floor of 14th century St Mary’s Church in Redgrave Suffolk. An interesting note about the church is that, in 1506 the rector of the church was Cardinal Wolsey, later to be Lord Chancellor to King Henry VIII. A tunnel has been discovered underneath the Moot Hall and leading all of the 1.5 miles to be Beeleigh Abbey 😉
Don't forget to put your clocks forward. Today is the start of British Summertime.

On this day 28th March 1555 Maldon Barber Steven Knight was burnt at the stake for being a Protestant in the reign of bloody Mary and for denying transubstantiation. He was tried on the ninth day in February that year by Edmund Boner, the Bishop of London along with seven others between the 26th and 29th of March who was then each executed in their own towns. They are recorded in John Foxe’s Book of Martyrs, The Acts and Monuments. The Site of Steven Knight’s execution is where the Old Iron Maldon works building now stands and is visible from the roof of the Moot Hall.
One of our guides Penney MacAvoy will be giving a talk about the Moot Hall alongside Mike Fogg at the Essex History Group. The talk will be held at the Essex Records Office on Tuesday 12th at 10:30am see the link for more details.
Names not to call the bailiff
To celebrate world book day the Heritage Manager of the Moot Hall has chosen an extract from the Maldon Court book 1457-1543 of the names or insults not to call the bailiff, and was discovered by Essex Records searcher Tom Johnson. The extract comprises of a lists of insults, not permitted to be used against any of the Borough’s officials – the bailiff, his friends, the wardens, ‘or any other man inside the walls’. Persons caught using any of t...hese insults was liable to a fine of 6 shillings and 8 pence. Pictured is the Latin extract, with the transcript below:
‘And it is computed in the first court of the year last past that from ancient custom it is not allowed to anyone coming within the borough aforesaid to say violently to any bailiff, or bailiff’s friends, or any other man inside the walls, or of the wardmen there living by any means[?], the names or [lit.] endings following, that is to say, thief, nor whoreson, false, nor forsworn, cuckold, nor knave, backbiter, nor bawd [pimp], to their public reprobation neither in judicial fora, acts, cases (nor [even] traitors, unless to the use of the lord king, these [words] judicially licensed) under the pain of the court, to the use of the borough aforesaid, as often as it [the court] is held, being 6 shillings 8 pence [half a mark]. This is made at the beginning [of the court], firmly guarded.
It does beg the question, what about the use of any insults not on the list.

Friday fun There is actually a song about a Moot Hall.
It was written and recorded by the progressive folk rock band Amazing Blondel in 1970 on the Island record label.
... They named the band after Richard 1st court musician Blondel de Nesle, who according to legend travelled through Europe, singing at every castle to locate the Richard when he was held prisoner in order to aid his escape.
In 1970 Amazing Blondel where one of the bands to play at the first Glastonbury festival, It was in this year the band members of 'Free' introduced them to Chris Blackwell who signed them to island records, releasing the album Evensong, that included ‘Old Moot Hall’
Enjoy.
