Every year, Future Leaders from a local Management Consultant company orienteer their way through the Hertfordshire countryside to Church Farm Ardeley. This is no mean feat.
In unfamiliar surroundings, the group is dropped up to ten miles away from the farm with nothing more than a map and a compass (we have professional orienteers on hand to guide / observes should the team take a wrong turn and start heading the wrong way up the A1).
Often called the “thinking sport”, orie...nteering is sure to exercise both mind and body, encouraging participants to build relations, take decisions and ultimately collaborate if they want to reach their end destination before sunset..
On arrival at Church Farm, these aspiring leaders are tested further as they complete a series of cerebral and physical team tasks in order to obtain food and drink, bedding and shelter for a night under the stars.
Finding food and shelter is challenging enough, but faced with this when weary and hungry requires leadership and resilience. What we have observed is leaders are not born with the ability to cope with stress better than the rest of us, they simply realise that dealing with stress and pressure is a necessary step on the path to achievement and instead of fearing it, equip themselves to make the most of it…. Time for reflection, feedback and facilitated group discussion is built into the programme.
Other companies have taken it further, including challenges such as night orientation, wild cooking and foraging, survival skills and bushcraft.
