About Moyse'S Hall Museum

Museum with variety of collections

Moyse'S Hall Museum Description

For almost a thousand years Moyse's Hall has looked out over the Market Place of Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk. It has seen many changes since it was built in 1180 and has had a variety of different uses, including a tavern and a 'gaol'. Currently it's a museum which provides an excellent setting in which to trace the unfolding story of West Suffolk, through displays which range from prehistoric times right through to the present. Moyse's Hall's own story is as rich and varied as the collections which it houses.

A huge thank you to the servicewomen and their families for loaning us these amazing pieces for display over the past few days.
We supported an amazing project created by our Bury St Edmunds Market team, local artist/teacher Louise Gridley and her students. We’re always pleased to support any project that brings generations together.
From QA Nurses to Wrens, members of the army bands and the last living spitfire pilot; we were pleased to be a part of the projects interpretation of the story.

Wonderful to hear Mary Beale’s piece ‘The Young Bacchus’ ('Child as Bacchus') discussed on BBC Radio 4 this morning, on loan from our West Suffolk collections to Lyon & Turnball for their beautiful display - “Bright Souls”: The Forgotten Story of Britain’s First Female Artists. Curated by Dr Bendor Grosvenor.
‘The Young Bacchus’ is usually on long-term display at Moyse’s Hall; with the painting returning to our walls after its one month display in the aforementioned exhibiti...on.
Young Bacchus isn’t the only one that gets to travel away for display with many thousands of people enjoying Beale’s work at the various professional places we loan to.
We’re very proud to care for such an important collection of work and Dr Grosvenor and Lyn & Turnball have been fantastic to deal with. So thanks to them.

What a fantastic group from Guildhall Feoffment Pre-school and Nursery yesterday. Those mini-explorers had a go at washing clothes with Victorian equipment, played with Victorian toys and had a special trip around the 'Looking in Wonderland' exhibition.
Brilliant group, welcome back any time.

Alongside this beautiful exhibition we're doing 'A Summer of Stories' - with items from our own collections seeking to bring some of the most famous children's books to life. Together with family trails, holiday activities and quizzes.
The umbrella rack is ready for your pit stop from the rain.
