About Mr B'S Emporium Of Reading Delights

Award winning independent bookshop in the heart of Bath.

Mr B'S Emporium Of Reading Delights Description

Mr B's is a beautiful, energetic and innovative bookshop on John Street in the heart of Bath. It's a bright labyrinthine space where book-related chatter and advice seems ever-present and you never know what you might encounter next, from claw-foot bath book displays to toilets illustrated by Chris Riddell. We opened our shop in 2006 and it has twice been named the UK's best independent bookshop. In 2015 the Guardian named Mr B's one of the ten best bookshops in the world.

Brothers and Sisters of Bath, bring forth the holy grail of comedy! This Autumn, we’ll welcome the absurdly funny, founding member of Monty Python and bonafide book-lover, Eric Idle to Bath for a one-of-a-kind event.
“Always Look on the Bright Side of Life” is Eric’s brilliantly entertaining “Sortabiography”. With the off-beat humour that saw him catapulted to fame, Eric recounts a childhood at an austere boarding school, tales of rubbing shoulders with some of the cultural r...evolution’s most legendary names (think George Harrison, David Bowie, Robin Williams, Mick Jagger and Steve Martin to name just a few) and his incredible creative work on Monty Python and Life of Brian.
As one of our personal heroes – for his ingenious comedy, writing and for his passion for bookshops (he’s written blogs raving about Mr B’s and is a regular visitor to our shop when he pops over from LA) – we are so thrilled to introduce you to Eric. Join us for what is sure to be a remarkable evening with a true legend. And make sure you follow Eric on Twitter (@EricIdle) for more news on what he has in store for our Bath audience!

The time has come… Markus Zusak, the author of the international bestselling novel “The Book Thief”, is BACK and this November, we’re bringing him to Bath to tell you all about his incredible new book.
“Bridge of Clay” is that rare breed of book – a novel with so much heart that it’s sure to be loved by almost everyone! At the book’s core are the five chaotic Dunbar brothers; their parents gone astray they have been left to live, love, fight and grieve in a house bustling wi...th a raucous animal menagerie, named after greek heroes.
Written in a thought-provoking, jigsaw puzzle style, which gradually reveals its missing pieces, “Bridge of Clay” is at once an undulating family history, an emotional rollercoaster and an extraordinary tale of Clay – a tormented boy who takes on the mammoth task of building a bridge…
We’ve already fallen head-over-heels in love with the Dunbar family, with both Mr B’s Emma and Nic devouring and adoring a prepublication manuscript of this brilliant book and other members of the Mr B’s team queuing up to follow suit. Now, we are beyond excited to welcome Markus, all the way from Australia, to tell us more about what is sure to be one of our – and your – favourite books of 2018.

This is the most wonderful bookshop. It’s a real gem. The staff are amazing, so knowledgeable about the books, authors and genres. I couldn’t recommend it highly enough. I shall definitely pop in every time I’m in Bath.

Thank you for having us today. The student I’m hosting and I came in for a mooch and to pick up a copy of “Persuasion.” It became clear within moments of entering the shop that tearing ourselves away would be the most difficult thing we did all day (even when we include activities like finding a parking space in central Bath). The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and engaging. We had a huge conversation with one of the booksellers and ended up with a massive list of recommendations for the two of us and our family members. I definitely want a book spa for my birthday. Sorry we almost stole your pen though! Hopefully see you again soon.

Such a brilliant shop with loads squeezed into a small space. Great art and craft books section and lovely people. I must come back for an event sometime!

User

Spent a pleasant couple of hours in this heavenly escape from reality yesterday - a warm fire, tea and cake, and so many wonderful books! Could have stayed longer and spent more - it wasn't even my book spa! Thanks for letting me sit in on my husband's treat! We are going to visit again...ďż˝

Recommended to visit by a friend whose own family are local to Bath, we arrived with our grandson of 11 (from Aberdeen) who loves reading and needed new directions and authors to extend his range of writers. We were helped by Ed, who offered a range of choices and styles of writing with an avuncular enthusiasm and detailed reasons why the ones not immediately recommended now might be good to get into in a year or so (very useful!). Grandson very happy and started one recommendation in a cafe round the corner whilst tired but very happy grandparents carried the remainder of the purchased books! Shall be back. Thank you!

My son received a book spa for his birthday. What an absolutely wonderful gift. Henry, our book expert, was great. He listened to what my son liked, discussed lots of ideas with him then presented him with a selection of books to choose from. One very happy boy went home with 7 great books plus a list of others to read when these are finished. I would recommend Mr B's to anyone who loves to read. Thank you

My mother and I went to Mr B’s and it was fantastic! I was a particularly tricky customer in that I could only really say what I didn’t like rather than what I did like! But Amy was great, very easy to talk to and made me feel relaxed. Mr B’s also provided vegan cake for me...! What a great place! Thank you Amy, you’re a star! Xxx

User

My friend and I had a fabulously quirky Book Spa experience . Nik was brilliant and even brought me to tears whist describing one of the books. How good is he ? I would recommend this to any book lover, great fun, amazing book store and staff clearly devoted to their jobs. Most importantly we came away with a pile of books I would never have thought of reading . I've already immersed myself into the first one and I'm captivated already . Thankyou so much .

My friend Genette and I were lucky enough to have a Book Spa with Emma and Amy this morning. This was a treat for Genette who has just had a 'big birthday'!

What a fantastic experience - if you love books this is the treat for you. We had in-depth discussion with our Bibliotherapists about the books we liked to read and the ones we didn't! They then left us with coffee and delectable brownies and went off to find us some books! They returned and their choices were spot on which is quite an achievement considering they'd only just met us. They talked us through the books and then left us to decide which books we wanted. What a fantastic three hours! Our thanks go to all the staff of Mr B's that we met but particularly to Emma and Amy - we will be back ...

My father bought me a subscription to Mr B’s for Christmas. After completing a survey, which is very in depth, I excitedly waited for my first book. When It arrived it was better than I imagined!

Brown paper packaging, tied up with a string and sealed with a wax stamp, and that was just for me to open. The books were carefully selected, just for me. And I loved everyone one of them!

Thank you Mr B’s I’m going to miss my monthly bundle!

Just had a reading spa at Mr B’s. I cannot recommend it highly enough. What a great idea, talking about books for a couple of hours. Sam gave me loads of ideas and I bought some interesting books. Great cake as well. Thanks

User

It’s not often that I write a review, but for Mr. B’s. I’ll cheerfully make an exception. I cannot recommend the shop highly enough: they provide approachable book selling, in beautiful, quirky surroundings. The team are equally adept at offering advice, assisting in finding reading material or engaging in bookish debate.

There’s no greater endorsement than the admission that, since discovering Mr. B’s a few months ago, I no longer buy books from anywhere else. In short, if you enjoy reading, pay a visit to Mr B's Emporium of Reading Delights: the best bookshop I’ve ever encountered.

User

If you're in Bath and a book lover, going to Mr B's is a must! I just popped in to have a look and the staff are so friendly. I could have spoken to them for years about all the books they've read and enjoyed. I bought two books, but could have bought so many more. Especially as the team spoke so passionately! Well worth a visit.

User

I'm the lucky recipient of a Mr B's gift subscription and got my first mystery book today. Took me 8 hours to unwrap it as it looked so beautiful when it arrived (brown paper package, tied up with string, wax seal and lovely note from my personal bibliotherapist)!! In a time when so much is virtual and electronic, I can't tell you how much of a thrill it was to get such a lovely parcel, and then to discover the delicious looking book inside! :-)

User

I was given a book spa treatment voucher for my birthday this year and it is one of the most awesome presents I've ever been given. When I got to the shop everyone was friendly and welcoming and I was shown upstairs to a cute little reading room. I met Emma who brought me a cuppa and a brownie (amazing). We had a chat about the kinds of books I like and Emma went off to get some suggested reads. Then we talked through them before I had the difficult decision of which ones to take home! I would highly recommend this shop to anyone and the reading spa treatment is the perfect present for anyone who loves books. Thanks Emma (and everyone at Mr B's). I am one happy bookworm.

I bought my wife a book spa for Christmas and when I dropped her off at Mr B's I expected to return to find her clutching a few books and happy enough.

What I found was their cosy bibliotherapy room, in which my wife sat, tea in hand, with a pile of book recommendations half as high as her and causing much consternation as she tried to decide which to leave behind.

We returned the next day, fuelled in part by my jealousy at her excellent book choices and engaged in a long chat with staff that resulted in us buying another half dozen tomes, most of which were completely new to me.

There simply is no better book shop for service and welcoming atmosphere and we will now be making a regular 'pilgrimage' to stock up our ever growing 'To Be Read' piles.

User

Had a lovely couple of hours yesterday for my reading spa. Thoroughly recommend it to anyone interested in books and finding new authors and genres to try. Ed was amazing and had a very similar taste in books and I was impressed by his knowledge but also his passion for books. I brought everything he recommended as I couldn’t decide between the and now having the difficulty of which one to start with! We definitely be recommending the experience to friends who are book lovers

User

Got given a book spa for my birthday and had a wonderful time talking through my favourite books and then going through the huge selection that was picked out for me!! I left with a lovely selection of books that I can’t wait to read! Customer service was brilliant, the atmosphere was warm and the coffee was lovely! Will definitely be back again soon!

User

Amazing!!!! The best word to describe this shop has to be PERFECTION!! My son was in his element. My only negative is that it is a four hour drive for our next visit ďż˝
