Some fascinating footage from Wigan during the 1984/85 Miners’ Strike shown during a BBC documentary on Margaret Thatcher. Can you spot a familiar face? #localhistory #wigan #minersstrike

☀️☀️ The sun is now shining (at last!) and it’s the ideal time to give your stove some TLC. I swept and serviced this Firefox multi fuel stove for a regular customer yesterday, supplying new stove bricks and door rope seals. It’s now all ready for the forthcoming burning season 🔥🔥🔥🔥

It’s peak housing buying 🏠 time now, and ones with ‘real’ fireplaces 🔥 are massively appealing. But many of them are passed from one owner to another without them being checked. Some I’ve seen are downright dangerous. Here’s what you can do to ensure you don’t get caught out...

Don’t see many around now, but it’s always lovely when I see an original open fire range cooker on my travels. I swept, smoke checked and issued a certificate for this one in Appley Bridge today. Whether your fire is old or new, don’t forget to get it swept! 🎩🎩

Great crowds at Marple Carnival 🎡

Lovely to see so many people at Marple Carnival today. If you’re coming along, we’re right at the entrance to the park - you can’t miss us! We’ve got some great free information courtesy of the Burn Right campaign and you can also book your regular sweep at same time #marple #chimneysweep #burnright

We’re lucky to have lovely, loyal customers like Lorraine who I called on this morning to carry out an annual sweep of her open fire. Now is the best time of year to have your chimney swept, so why not make an appointment? Have a great weekend everyone! 🎩🎩🎩

Bit of a Friday fun fact, not chimney related at all.... Ever wondered why the first motorway in the UK was called the M6 and not the M1?
There is actually a reason, and it goes back to road classifications. This started in 1913 and split the country into 9 zones. 1-6 that fan out clockwise from London and a further 3 that fan out 7-9 from Edinburgh.
The M1 runs right up the middle of the country on the edge of zone 1. So the first motorway built was called the M6 because it... runs along the edge of zone 6.
Smaller A and B roads also follow this convention, which means you know where in the country you are by the road number.
Some motorways such as M40 and M25 are numbered as such as they mirror the old A-roads nearby.
Fascinating isn’t it? Have a great weekend everyone! 🎩🎩👍👍

Decided to cover a slightly different topic for my blog this week... some recent social history which ushered in a new generation of ‘real’ fireplaces. Hope you enjoy it. Happy reading!
