This is a photo from another groomer. This is what happens when a 'doodle' coat is not brushed regularly. As you can see the top of the coat looks free from knots but if you don't comb to the skin the coat matts. New owners rarely understand how difficult it is to maintain the coats of this type of mixed breed.

Ok so here is my dilemma. If I was walking down the street and saw somebody beating a dog I would try to stop them. If one of my neighbours dogs was not being cared for I would report them. We all know that if a dog is overweight, as a dog cannot feed itself, the owner is over-feeding or feeding an inappropriate diet and I would mention this as a possible cause for future ill health. So how do you deal with the owners of a dog who is subjected to some much second hand cigarette smoke their breath actually smells of nicotine? Its probably as negligent as beating your dog or not feeding them, but so much more difficult to deal with.

As you can see I am having a real push for owners to think what they feed their dogs at the moment. Good nutrition not only supports health but has a massive effect on behaviour. Neli is full on feeding raw. God help us if she was fed kibble.

To get an extra handle on treats, let’s equate them in human terms… 20 lb/ 9kg Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Human equivalent intake: Woman (154 lb/70 kg) 1 ounce of cheddar cheese (28 grams) = One and a half chocolate bars 1 tablespoon of peanut butter = One slice of pizza 1 oatmeal biscuit = One hotdog... I slice buttered toast = 3 x bags of potato chips 1 slice Hawaiian pizza = 4 x hamburgers plus half a bag of potato chips 1 pigs ear chew = 4 ½ sugared donuts 1 x small/medium jumbone dog treat = 3 x hamburgers and half a chocolate bar And let’s equate some weight gain in human terms… A 12lb Shih Tzu gaining an additional 5lb is the equivalent of an extra 58 lb on a 140lb woman. A 10 kilogram Cavalier King Charles Spaniel gaining an additional 2kg is the equivalent of a 70kg woman putting on an additional 14 kilograms. An extra 15 kilograms on a 30 kilogram Labrador is the equivalent of a 70 kilogram lady carrying an additional 35 kilograms.
