☀️ Keeping your dog cool in the summer ☀️
You might think that shaving your dogs coat short is a great idea and will help keep your dog cool. However, it is not always a good idea to shave your dog for the summer for the following reasons:
💦 Dog’s coats are designed to capture air and use it as an insulator. In the winter, this keeps the cold out and the heat in. During the summer, this system holds the heat at bay and helps your dog regulate their body temperature. Without ...this insulating layer of hair, it will make them more susceptible to heat stroke and possible sunburn!
💦 Dogs don’t cool down the same way that humans do.
* When humans are overly warm, our skin perspires over our whole body helping us to cool down.
* Dogs, however, are limited to a very small area in which they perspire. The footpads (which sweat), and the lungs, where panting allows for latent heat to be removed through evaporation.
💦 Shaving your dogs coat will have no effect on these areas. As long as your dogs coat is brushed out and dead hair and matts are removed, their coat will help them to stay cool.
💦 Leaving matts and dead coat in your dogs fur can cause them to overheat. It would be the same as us wearing a thick winter jacket in the middle of summer! 🥵
Giving your dogs coat a light trim is great to help with a thick coat, and will be more beneficial to them provided that they are brushed regularly! 🐶✂️🌞
