Responding to the news that the Penny Pie Park gyratory scheme had been approved by Cabinet, Cllr Hannah Kitching said:
I am absolutely disgusted, disappointed and saddened by this decision today.
Penny Pie Park is a precious piece of public green space designated as such in the Council's own Local Plan. When it suits Barnsley Labour that plan means nothing, because today they decided to appropriate that land for Highways use.
... While other councils are declaring a climate emergency Barnsley Labour's Cabinet has today approved the decision to turn a precious public green space into a 3 lane traffic gyratory system, felling healthy trees in the process.
While er councils are investing in active travel & green public transport options. Barnsley's Labour Council is building bigger roads, in front of their biggest secondary school.
Hundreds of Horizon school kids currently walk home across a park. Soon they will have cross 6 lanes of traffic.
While other councils are aiming to reduce children's exposure to air pollution, in order to protect their health, Barnsley Council is putting a children's play park next to a huge traffic roundabout system.
Steve Houghton and his Cabinet care neither about the environment nor the health and wellbeing of our children.
They should be utterly ashamed.
We are not done.
