My Voices Helping Hands Description

The idea for ‘My Voices Helping Hands’ started in 2013 when Katie, the founder, felt that everyone needs to be able to be empowered by the use of communication– in which ever way met their needs. Katie herself has Autism, selective mutism, learning disabilities, verbal dyspraxia, cognitive processing delay & severe mental health problems. ‘My Voices Helping Hands’ was started & run from Katie’s room on an NHS secure mental health ward whilst receiving life saving treatment for her autism & mental health needs with just a printer, a laminator & supervised use of scissors. Katie’s psychiatric nurse Pam– who had gone over & above in her role to help Katie communicate on the ward suggested she should share her experiences, skills & knowledge of different ways to communicate & get through day to day life, which Katie doesn’t understand, through communication / visual aids & social stories. Katie was extremely inspired by Pam & the story carries on from there. . .
So why did Katie feel the need to empower communication? Well quite simply because after so many years of having severe communication needs & a lot of anxiety around change, new things, the unknown & much more. Katie strongly believes that no-one should have to suffer like her in trying to understand the world or communicate– so therefore whatever she can do to help make someone else’s experiences with communication difficulties & understanding easier, Katie will strive to do whatever she can. Katie is supported by her care team to run the small enterprise which she hopes will grow & evolve!

So, we have been a bit pants at updating our Facebook page, but we have been working on building a website and expanding our work- including adding and using Makaton signs and symbols which is very exciting. We have also been looking at a change in logo to something that looks a bit smarter and hopefully in the very near future we will be looking to add extra services available and taking 'My Voices Helping Hands' far further than just a web based, bespoke service! So things are looking exciting for us in the next few months...we hope you continue to join us on our adventure forward!!
