Myddelton House Gardens Description
Delve into the enchanting six acres of Myddelton House Gardens and discover the compelling story of one of Britainβs most famous self-taught gardeners, artists and expert botanists - Edward Augustus Bowles. He lived in Myddelton House from 1865 to 1954 and dedicated much of his life to transforming the gardens with his love of unusual and exotic plants. Thereβs an impressive range of flora and fauna to stimulate the senses each season. Explore the unusual plants of the Lunatic Asylum, newly restored Kitchen Garden, colourful Alpine Meadow and the extensive snowdrop collection which bring the gardens to life during February. The gardens are also home to a beautiful carp lake, a Victoria conservatory and a number of historical artefacts collected and treasured by Mr Bowles, including pieces from the original St Paulβs Cathedral and the Enfield Market Cross. Donβt miss the 108 year old Wisteria which turns a brilliant blue when it flowers during May.

The team have been busy planting the new Japanese Holly plants along the Tulip Terrace. These replace the box plants that have suffered blight and Box Caterpillar. The variety we have chosen is Ilex crenata 'Dark Green'.
Over the past couple of years we have been removing much of the Vinca that has dominated the ground covering plants on Tom Tiddlers. The result is an explosion of Snowdrops that would otherwise have been hidden.

Hemidesmus indicus (Indian sarsaparilla). Seeds have found the smallest patch of soil in the courtyard to germinate and grow. Rooting so easily it's a wonder that those very roots are traditionally used to treat a wide variety of illnesses, including skin diseases and chronic coughs.
The first 'Scilla bifolia' of the year at Myddelton House. Spring is most definitely coming into full swing. But it's still January π€. What oddities have you noticed in your garden so far this year?
We've been busy in the Rose Garden installing metal edging to define and protect the hedging plants and Rose's that will soon be going in the beds. Just as E.A Bowles (Gussie) would have wanted it β
The sweet scent of this Viburnum farreri 'Candidissimum' hasgiven us a fragrant treat all winter πΈ
