About National Ice Centre

Glide into the exciting world of ice skating! Children under 5 skate for free at the National Ice Centre. We have tots sessions, foam parties, skating lessons, birthday parties and loads more!

National Ice Centre Description

The National Ice Centre was given the royal seal of approval by HM the Queen on July 31 2002. This topped off £43 million and seven years of hard work, to turn the dream of the UK’s first centre of excellence in ice sports into reality.

Nottingham has a long tradition of ice skating stretching back many years. It started way back in 1895 with skating on the frozen River Trent to over 60 years of skating in the old Ice Stadium. But it was the 80’s that really saw the glory days for British skating with Nottingham’s most famous couple Jane Torvill and Christopher Dean dominating the World and Olympic Championships. Their triumphs have inspired a whole new generation of youngsters into taking up ice sports.

The Arena Rink was opened on the 1st April 2000 by Jayne Torvill and was followed by the Olympic Rink opening just a year later on 7th April 2001. This made the National Ice Centre the first twin Olympic-sized (60m x30m) ice rink facility in the UK heralding a new era in the development of ice skating.

The centre now provides top class facilities and coaching staff for a whole range of ice sports from Free Skating and Ice Dance to Synchronized skating, ice hockey and Short Track Speed Skating. The National Ice Skating Association (NISA) has designated the National Ice Centre as a Centre of Excellence for Short Track Speed Skating and it is home to the Great Britain Short Track Speed Skating squad. The Nottingham Panthers also train here and use our venue for their home games.

We have many elite ice skaters training at the NIC and run a successful skating academy. Coaches from the NIC also go out to city schools to teach the kids in-line blading and this programme now attracts hundreds of children.

As well as boasting two Olympic sized ice pads the National Ice Centre is home to Motorpoint Arena Nottingham. The arena is the East Midlands hottest concert venue hosting live music and sporting entertainment to audiences of up to 10, 000 people.

We have 3 children doing lessons 2 of which are doing the tots skating lessons on Sundays, the staff are amazing & really friendly I’ve found. The prices are quite steep especially if we was to go as a family which is a real shame

User

Spent a wonderful evening here last night, excellent service from all the staff from the time we entered to the time we left! Loved it! Will definitely come back when we next visit Nottingham.

User

Really nice place. Clean. Will definitely be going there again

User

I really enjoyed my first lesson this week

User

Had a great time all the family , Daughter had a nasty fall and the staff were brilliant in coming over to assist , soon had daughter back on her feet. Could not thank them enough 5*

User

A great place to watch ice hockey at various levels, the staff are very friendly and welcoming. I fell over outside late one Sunday evening, the Manager and his staff really looked after me, making sure I was ok to travel back home to Birmingham. I have been back many times and the experience is always the same, very pleasant, I would highly recommend the N.I.A. to anyone.

User

The skates are comfortable to skate in for hours! The blades/edges aren't blunt so you actually have grip on the ice and you're not slipping everywhere. The rink is large and plenty of place to practice. Plenty of exits to get off the rink if you need to.

However. The lockers are 50p or £1 and once you unlock them, you have to repay the money to use it again. The price to skate is painful including skate hire AND the locker, also especially for lessons. £58 for each 6 week course until you pass the grades, that's insane. It will cost hundreds to pass all 8 grades. I'm not sure why exactly I'd be paying so much. It's enough to put people off.

I loved skating here with friends, and I was going to book lessons but I just don't have the money. I'll switch to inline skating.

User

I was very impressed with the facility and the friendly staff when I attended an EIHA ice hockey match on a Sunday evening.

One word of warning do not use the NCP car park on Stoney street close to the arena. The hockey match was a fiver but it cost £16 to park which is totally outrageous for a Sunday night . I am told the multi story in nearby Brook Street is a lot cheaper so please be careful when parking up.

User

Arena itself is great but really disgusted that we had to throw away our food and drink away before we went in,you have to buy food inside at exorbitant prices absolute rip off.

User

The tots skating session was ok- lots of staff and a roped off area for the little ones. However, we pre-booked but had to wait in a massive queue to pick up tickets anyway. We were told lockers were included when I asked at the ticket office, but when I got downstairs it turned out they weren't. We then had to walk all the way around the ice rink (with a 2 year old on skates for the first time) to actually get to the tots area. With all of the faffing around, queuing and locker problems we got on the ice 20 mins into the 45 min session. Then there weren't enough seas/car aids to go around all the little ones. The concept of tots-skating was great and fun when we actually got to try it, but the logistics of the session were not well thought out from a parents point of view.

User

It is an okay place to skate but the ice really should be resurfaced after an hour or so as it becomes very difficult to skate on it. Also there should be a limit on the amount of people who can skate on the ice as it gets very crowded sometimes and you are more likely to fall into people or have people fall into you.

User

Expensive at £8.50 if you add the parking or walking halfway across the city. Also being charged 50p for a locker that can't be opened and reused is a bit money grubbing. £2.50 to hire a toy for the rink was unexpected and would have been ok if there was a place to leave them if you need a bathroom or food break. The staff were scarce and grumpy and didn't stop people who were going the wrong way, going very fast or trying to do routines in the middle of crowded lane. £2 for a bottle of soda is silly (I didn't bother). I will probably not bother with the hassle again even though I am local.

User

Would easily have been 5 stars but they crammed 6 schools groups in with us. The 'coaches' looking after the kids were rude at best, negligent at worst. An hour and a half wasted because of kids all over the ice completely out of control.

User

We went for the 10am Sunday morning session had no seals left for my nieces to skate with so had to wait till toddler session to finish at 10.45 so went into cafe and had a drink and ordered some toast and cheese on toast and it took over 25 mins in the end to actually get the food , disgusting service in the cafe as it wasn't that busy and the so called chef had gone somewhere according to another member of staff , honestly are u trying to tell me someone else couldn't have put bread into a toaster instead of having to wait for that length of time as my nieces were crying ....

User

Thank you for including skate hire in the admission price, I love having my own skates but also paying for skate hire I won't be using! Ridiculous! Staff on the rink were useless as usual, teenagers hanging around the side of the ice which doesn't help those unable to skate as they can't hold on anywhere. Adult skate sessions on mid week during the morning when most people work so that's pointless and cross ice barrier always in operation for evening skates in the week...think I'll be driving to Sheffield in future! As usual the NIC haven't paid any attention to their customers.

User

Really poor customer service. Door to Ice Centre locked, but no clear signage to know where to go. My wife had a lesson booked but no member of staff had any idea how it worked. The coach was on the ice and made no effort to find her student. Not certain how someone wanting to learn to skate is supposed to find a coach who is already on the ice. I went for a coffee in the 'bar and grill'. Bartender eyeballed me but said nothing as she disappeared into the kitchen, while the chef/cook stood at the end of the bar chatting. Eventually the bartender reappeared. When I asked for a coffee she reeled off a list too quick to hear. And after making my drink she plonked it at the end of the bar, out of my sight. I eventually guessed where it was and where the milk was. My wife tells me her lesson was good and the coach was friendly and helpful. But all the customer service surrounding it was terrible.

So, I'm looking to go skating, and possibly get lessons. The website has a "Lessons" section, which has a link to "Skating Lessons Times & Prices", except that if you click on the link, it says "There were no results found."

Abysmal.

User

Service as always is poor the arena is in it for the money and does not invest in British ice hockey food is dreadful and staff need to re train (if they ever trained) in customer service.

User

Last year I was going very regulary with the session at 5 pounds at night during the week + locker at 50 p. 5,50 was a good alternative, but I am furious to see it raised so much this year. Plus charging a compulsory fee for skate hire (even for those who have their own skates is really wrong. There should at least be an option at 6,5 then! Conclusion: I do not come anymore and go to the swimming pool instead. Wrong wrong wrong!
