About National Joint Registry

The NJR collects data on all hip, knee, ankle, elbow and shoulder joint replacements to help monitor the performance of implants and surgery (est. 2002).

National Joint Registry Description

Established in 2002, the National Joint Registry (NJR) for England and Wales was set up by the Department of Health and Welsh Government to collect information on joint replacement surgery and monitor the performance of joint replacement implants.

Hip, knee, ankle, elbow and shoulder joint replacements have become common and highly successful operations that bring many patients improved mobility and relief from pain. Thousands of such operations take place in the UK every year.

A wide range of implants can be used in the joint replacement operations that are carried out across England and Wales. The registry helps to monitor the performance of these implants and the effectiveness of different types of surgery, improving clinical standards and benefiting patients, clinicians and the orthopaedic industry.
