About National Trust - Glendurgan Garden & North Helford Countryside

An amazing valley of exotic plants and wildflowers leading down to Durgan beach and the stunning coastline of the North Helford countryside.

National Trust - Glendurgan Garden & North Helford Countryside Description

Created by shipping agents from the nearby port of Falmouth, the Fox family, this 'small peace of heaven on earth' is a valley full of exotic plants and peaceful wildflower patches.
Original features from the creation of the garden nearly 200 years ago still serve their purpose: a maze on a hill-side, a rotating swing, a small school-room building and the unspoilt village of Durgan at the bottom of the garden next to the Helford river.
We've got a small shop, plant centre and cafe with covered seating area - and miles of coastal walks if you're looking for a full day out.
Please note we use a mixture of current and historic photographs on this page. For up-to-date information on what's out in flower in the garden do ring us on 01326 252020 before visiting if there's something you're particularly wishing to see.

Early bluebells are emerging alongside the late magnolias and giant rhododendrons! If you're keen to visit and enjoy a gentle stroll to see the spring flowers, we suggest arriving after 2.30pm during the Easter holidays to avoid peak times. There will still be plenty of time after Easter to enjoy the bluebells as more of them flower across Glendurgan's three valleys throughout April and early May.

With the weather looking dry and bright for the next few days it's the perfect opportunity to take a stroll through the garden and enjoy the beach in Durgan village. The fish cellar and its team of friendly volunteers will be open 11am - 4.30pm for a chat or even a second hand book if you're looking for an interesting read. There are buckets and spades to borrow or you can simply pull up a chair and enjoy the views across the Helford river.

As spring progresses, Glendurgan celebrates Easter with a nature themed Cadbury Easter Egg Hunt suitable for all ages. £2 per hunt which includes a delicious chocolate treat for everyone who take part.

Can you lend us a hand at our next beach clean event?
We've rescheduled our March beach clean to Sunday 24 March 2-4pm starting at Bosveal National Trust car park (TR11 5JR). We'll provide all the equipment - as well as lovely company and outstanding views across the river - and just need you to bring your enthusiasm. And of course, a few friends or family if they're willing to help out too. Everybody welcome! No need to book, just turn up on the day.
We also finish our beach cleans with complimentary cake and drinks in Durgan fish cellar if that helps to persuade anybody!

User

Due to the strong winds forecast please note Glendurgan will be closed on Sunday 3 March which also means we’re having to cancel the beach clean due to take place 10am - 12pm. Huge apologies for any disappointment but it is of paramount importance to keep our visitors, volunteers and staff safe during extreme weather. All being well, we’ll be open again from 10.30am on Tuesday 5 March.

my wife and I went here this morning and the first thing that hits you is the friendliness of the staff they greet you with a warm smile and are very polite then as you head into the gardens the color hits you so beautiful and the smell there's no words that can really describe the smell absolutely awesome it was a pleasant stroll down through the gardens to the beach which i might add is nice and clean then back up to the shop wheres there are plenty of plants to buy we ended up in the cafe where an abundance of food hot or cold is available all served up by good service service with a smile you can say again very polite . If you wanted to visit a garden in Cornwall then i/we would highly recommend Glendurgan its reasonable and very family orientated with the beach and a fine maze for both children and adults a very enjoyable day

User

We were greeted by two lovely smiling faces - so helpful as we did not have our membership cards with us. Sorted our entry quickly and gave us a quick review of the garden and its history. the small autumn leaflet was great for getting round the garden and enjoying the peace and serenity.

staff in the cafe were helpful, the tea was good but the carrot cake not so good (possibly packet made?). Toilets were very clean and car parking easy. We were delighted by the whole experience and thoroughly recommend it. A note of caution - the route is downhill and therefore up again!

User

We visit Glendurgan often and our son loves to explore the gardens and playing on the beach. It's become a family past time to complete the maze before we go home.

User

The gardens r super STUNNING at the min. Bluebells out of this world. Had a wonderful walk down to Durgan beach where myself, daughtervand grandchildren ate ice cream and skimmed stones whilst looking at the STUNNING view of boats bobbing on the sea. Idyllic place even more so in the sunshine x

User

Really lovely walk, so many weird and wonderful trees and plants, and although I didn't go in it, the maze was really lovely to see. The picturesque little beach was busy with small boats and dinghies . Lovely afternoon.

User

Lovely gardens and walk to a pretty little beach. The maze was good fun as well!

User

Just the thing on a beautiful autumn afternoon, a walk down the valley, that is Glendurgan, to the beach and back up again. Followed by a cup of tea in the cafe

User

Had a fantastic time here, was a family day out on my wife's Birthday and the weather was fab at the same time, had great fun making our way through the Maze and also ventured down to Durgan Village, will be back for sure.

User

Fantastic walk around the gardens and plenty for the children to enjoy, great afternoon out with the family.

User

Fantastic day out with the kids (4&7). They loved the maze and stone skimming but their particular favourite was the giant stride. Definitely would recommend.

User

Beautiful place to visit lovely walks with rich scent of flowers all the way down to the beach theres even a maze for the kids then afterwards have a cuppa in the cafe

User

Beautiful gardens leading down to a picturesque beach. A perfect day out.

User

At the moment (mid April), Glendurgan is a beautiful garden with amazing magnolias, camellias and primroses but is also lovely to visit anytime with year round interest, champion trees, a brilliant maze, a beach on the Helford River, an excellent cafe and helpful staff.

User

Amazing views, enjoyed the walk through the colourfull gardens. Friendly staff and a great cup of coffee to finish from the cafe.

User

gorgeous gardens and grounds, maze was fun and the stride the children loved. play and swim at beach was to lovely for words, and if had not been for the following issues a perfect day, Firstly the gravel on the paths was sometimes really slippery and made walking for less mobile in our group hard work, Secondly we asked at ice cream bar what time he shut and we planned our return from the beach perfectly to fit it in ONLY to be told could not do specials as no vanilla left and would not offer other flavour and he had no cream left when we could dearly see it in the fridge !

User

Looks fabulous. Friendly staff. Nice cafe too plus ample, guided, parking. Its one of the reasons why we joined the national trust. But very disappointed to be turned away. they said dogs are not allowed in the garden as stipulated by the donator. The national trust cornwall guide has no mention of dogs not being allowed in. Headed for Maenporth beach instead where the dog was allowed to run around.

User

Beautiful gardens and great maze, but paying for the car park too? It's not exactly cheap to get in. This trip I stayed in the car with the dog while the rest of the family went to the maze.

User

Terrible cafe worst meal I've had misfortune to pay for meal in a long time. Coffee was bland and food another level down. Such beautiful gardens though just wish the meal was up to standard

User

Nice gardens but poorly laid out and poorly signed entrance, with a green mound and path blocking a route to the restaurant from the entrance - a closed gate joining the entrance area to the restaurant could easily have been opened, saving on unnecessary walking. Would prefer to be walking round the gardens rather than taking a stupidly long route from A to B.

No dogs allowed. Kitchens closed at 3pm and poor choice of food after that. Went without food but really needed some. Won't be coming back here.
