About National Trust Studland Bay

Vast area of sandy beaches and heathland

National Trust Studland Bay Description

A glorious slice of natural coastline in Purbeck looked after by the National Trust, featuring a four-mile stretch of golden, sandy beach, with gently shelving bathing waters and views of Old Harry Rocks and the Isle of Wight. Ideal for water sports and includes the most popular naturist beach in Britain. The heathland behind the beach is a haven for native wildlife and features all six British reptiles. Designated trails through the sand dunes and woodlands, allow for exploration and spotting of deer, insects and bird life as well as a wealth of wild flowers. Studland was the inspiration for Toytown in Enid Blyton's Noddy.

A fascinating talk by Martin Jones about the surprise story of how he came across a sunken WW1 mine sweeper off the coast of Swanage.
Join us to hear Martin share his tale of discovery off the coast of Swanage, and how he has been working to discover the descendants of the minesweeper which sunk after hitting a mine in WW1. Suitable for all ages as part of the Purbeck at War exhibition.

Time to take down the Easter trail. Thanks to everyone who came along, all the proceeds go directly to taking care of this special place. And despite the rain, a few of the staff managed a final game of cricket before we put it all away. #studland #nationaltrust #purbeck

It’s the last day of our Easter trail and it’s been a fantastic few weeks of dune activities, hunting for animals and even spotting some real wildlife like this ‘skinshedder’. Come along today and explore the dunes on our Easter hunt. #nationaltrust #studland #easter

Some top tips for visiting Studland when it’s busy. Our cafe’s quietest times are in the morning and afternoon. If you are bringing your own lunch, try visiting the Discovery centre for a prefect quiet picnic spot with toilets. Our car parks may get full and will have to close, so try parking at South and Middle beach. We will keep Facebook updated with information about car park closures so check in to keep informed. Our Easter trail is also a great way to do something different on a hot day. #studland #nationaltrust #easter

You just cannot beat the walk from Swanage , up over Ballard Down , round Old Harry rocks , perfect picnic patch , then down onto the beach @ Studland with a refreshing well deserved treat at The Bankes Arms . Then back if you're feeling energetic or on the wonderful Purbeck Breezer if you're not truly a special day out.

This English beach is not as busy as those in Australia, Joes Cafe is very good value for money. It's a bit of a walk along the beach from Swanage. However, once you're further along and away from the crowds there is an authorised Naturist/Nudist beach; which is very discreet and respectable. I went there with a group of friends where we sunbathed topless/bottomless/natural and skinny-dipped. There was no awkwardness with other beach-goers.

The "studland walk" has been a weekly favourite of mine since I moved to Poole 7 years ago. Since having my second child a year ago, I haven't walked across these beautiful sands for many months.

Yesterday's walk was an absolute delight. Well maintained, natural beaches. Plenty of litter bins, clearly marked for recycling and land fill. I particularly liked your "helping hand" litter picking aid. What a fabulous way to encourage people to do their bit and keep these lovely public spaces clean. I even retrieved a plastic bag from the sea because I knew that a litter bin would not be far away.

So what if it gets pongy from time to time. I appreciate that you leave the seaweed there to do its natural work and support marine ecology. I just sit further up the beach.

Well done The National Trust for making this one of my favourite places to visit.

User

Thank you National Trust for organising the 10k run this morning! A challenging route but what amazing views. Thanks to all the volunteers who patiently waited for all the runners to pass - in the freezing cold!! Definitely worth doing again

User

Stunning area beach to explore with fantastic views out to sea. The cafe is often busy and a costs a bit more than you may expect to pay. A bowl of soup for example is £6

Plenty of free parking for national trust members.

Studland Bay is the most beautiful beach you could wish to go too. Gorgeous sands and lovely safe water for children of all ages ( birth too 100), a lovely gift shop, toilets that were very clean considering the footfall on a hot summers day. The only downside was queuing for 43 minutes ( and I did time it because one of my three granddaughters asked me the time as I joined the queue) for ice creams my 7,8,9 year old granddaughters were not impressed neither was my husband who was sat on the beach waiting, there was only one person serving and one taking the money, my husband had almost as long to wait earlier in the day for coffee😞 I no nobody can predict how busy each day will be but some contingency plans perhaps need to be sorted as there was a lot of unhappy people on Thursday and many left the queue and went away promising their children to stop somewhere else to get them an ice cream. Other than that hiccup we had a fantastic day ☀️👍👍

User

Great clean beaches with good parking close to the beach. Knoll beach is the best, it has a good NT shop and a nice beach cafe.

User

First time visiting there yesterday with my husband. Absolutely stunning. Parked in Knoll c.park and was pleasantly surprised how close it was to the beach. We will hopefully be coming back Saturday with our family as the beach is perfect for our 3 year old Grandson.

User

Fabulous place to visit been coming now for over 40 years. Mainly now park at Shell Bay as we have dogs and walk along the length of the beach. The only downside to Shell Bay is the lack of a cafe or something to buy a drink. I know last year during the peak summer hols there was a trailer there for ice creams and drinks but not this last week.

User

Excellent beaches. South beach is brilliant if you have a boat. Knoll beach has a lovely Cafe and great toilets. Great NT shop. South beach also has a little shop selling hot/ cold drinks, sandwiches, ice creams etc. Plus you can borrow deck chairs, windbreaks and buckets and spades. Great idea! Only thing is there is only 2 toilets and sometimes they may not have toilet roll and the bins are full! But you can use The Bankers Arms! Which is a great pub!

User

Amazing clean beach snack bar is excellent food fresh and hot very clean great view of old harry rocks we go there quite a lot all year round

User

Absolutely my most favourite beach. We visit all year round and it never disappoints. The calm, warm waters are great for swimming and watersports and the narrow beach with its soft golden sand is brilliant if you have kids as they're never far away. The National Trust shop and cafe with loos and showers is lovely at Knoll Beach too.

User

A place we have always enjoyed. However on Monday this week we were really upset to see a school group - teenagers - carrying red and white striped poles - trampling down the dunes in roped off areas clearly marked as the Trust are, and have been doing for some years now, restoring the dunes. I did report this to a member of National Trust staff who really didn't seem at all concerned. I will always support the work the Trust does but would like to see that my annual subscription and the buying of raffle tickets is not being wasted.

User

A lovely spot, the middle beach Café is great and worth saving. We had a great time on the beach very clean. I did not see access for wheelchair users, but there is another NT site close by which may be better? It is a short drive to Corfe Castle which is also well worth a visit. Thanks NT

User

A great day out well worth the effort fantastic wildlife good food in the cafe staff all very helpful free to members of the national trust boat fees apply adults £6.50 each but there is a charge to the dorset wildlife trust who jointly run with nt of two pound each but well worth it !!!

User

A beautiful place that can be so peaceful with just the waves lapping against the shore and the breeze rustling the dune grasses.

User

Not as pleasurable as usual on our visit ti the beach yesterday. Not only did the stacks of drying seaweed smell rather pungent, but there was also a district smell of raw sewage around the Knoll beach area. Many people were commenting on it. Could that be why the cafe was closed early? Or maybe its normal to stop serving on a beautiful evening, with plenty of people still walking, sitting on the sands, and even swimming! Come on National Trust! Are you so well off that you stick to these silly hours, despite the lovely hot weather?

User

Loved coming to studland with my older children 10 & 9 and baby 11 months the view was gorgeous and the weather was perfect the only reason I didn't give it a higher rating was my inability to use my pushchair. I know it is a beach but I was expecting some kind of disabled access so my baby could also enjoy the easter Egg hunt that my older children did unfortunately they had to do it on their own. Kind of defeats the object of a family trip out. I will know for next time to bring my baby's carrier.

User

Beautiful beach but spoilt by so many dogs running free when there are plenty of signs telling owners to keep them on leads, but no one seems to enforce the request so ignored by arrogant owners. My dogs are kept on leads, just seems unfair.
