Today's #ThrowbackThursday takes a look at our #CrabeaterSeal, gallery 5. The specimen was collected on the Southern Cross expedition, the first winter Antarctic venture, led by #CarstenBorchgrevnik on which the islands in Robertson's Bay and the Ross sea were first discovered. https://www.nhm.ac.uk/visit/tring.html

On this day in 1799 Mary Anning was born. Many Victorian scientists visited her shop in Lyme Regis including Dr Gideon Mantell who described the first fossils of Iguanodon. You can come and measure yourself against an Iguanodon's leg bones in our British Dinosaurs exhibition.

In #GameofThrones each of the different houses has it own sigil and these are all based around animals. The sigil for House Lannister is the lion. The lion in our gallery, originally from Zimbabwe was looking very regal until last week...

We are thankful to have many friends here at the Museum, including fantastic nature organisations such as the Woodland Trust. We often take part in events together – the next being our Bioblitz survey of the museum grounds on Thursday 30th May #FriendsMW

In 1892, Walter opened his Museum doors to the general public for the first time. An incredible 5000 people came to ponder its delights on day one. Although it has changed very little over the years, you may notice a few different specimens in this historical photograph of Gallery 4. #PhotoMW

Our collection has specimens from many great explorers including Darwin, Shackleton and Gould. The great lengths which these individuals took for science is astonishing.
Explore these specimens in our Behind the Scenes Voyages of Discovery tours #ExploreMW

For LGBTQ+ History Month this year, team members at the Museum wore rainbow lanyards and raised money for charity. Native to Australia, the Gouldian finch proudly sports its rainbow colours all year round! You can find ours in Gallery 1 #RainbowMW

A good work / play balance is important, just ask a crocodile! While not known for their playful habits, it's believed that crocodilians engage in various activities for fun, and have been observed using water slopes, giving each other piggybacks, and chasing each other. #PlayMW

Tucked away behind the scenes at the museum are 68 cabinets with more than a thousand drawers holding c. 4000 birds’ nests from birds all over the world. We hold the largest, most comprehensive nest collection in Europe.

Women have been part of the Museum since it opened in 1892 when Miss Thomas was Walter's librarian. This picture shows some of the #womeninculture currently working at the NHM Tring.

#OTD in 1926, Sir David Attenborough was born. Here he is during one of his visits to us, filming in what is now our Rothschild room. Happy 93rd Birthday, David!

That's right, I'm the #okapi! Also known as the 'forest giraffe', okapi and giraffes are the only two living members of the family Giraffidae. Primarily active during the daytime, the herbivorous okapi feeds on fruits, ferns and fungi, using it's long tongue to select it's meals. https://www.nhm.ac.uk/visit/tring.html
