Here are collection of “hagstones” laying on the beach in Whitby, england. it appears mysterious circles have been drilled through the rocks on the beaches of Whitby. However these holes are made by a burrowing modern day bivalve that uses An acidic enzyme that is used to burrow through the rock. As the rock is a soft limestone/mudstone this breaks along the bedding plane at 90 degrees to the burrow. In fact the circles are not circles but in fact slightly oval but our eyes and brains interpret the shape as a circle. Kind of interesting and thought people would like to know what these were in case they came across them. #bivalves #shells #limestone #beach #sea #stones #stone #whitby #yorkshire

Here is a Calymene blumenbachii. It is a species of trilobite discovered in the limestone quarries of Wren's Nest Hill in Dudley, England. Nicknamed the Dudley Bug or Dudley Locust by 18th century quarrymen it became a symbol of the town and featured on the Dudley County Borough Council coat-of-arms. Calymene blumenbachii is commonly found in Silurian rocks (about 430 million years ago) and is thought to have lived in the shallow waters of the Silurian, in low energy reefs. This particular specimen is currently for sale. This specimen still displays the ovipositor at the back of the body which indicates that this individual was a female as males do not have this feature. This isn’t a tooth or a Dracula fang from Whitby. This is the back end of a cuttlefish like animal called a belemnite. This was lying on the beach pebbles at Whitby and is approximately 180 million years old. #fossils #palaeontology #belemnite #belemnites #ammonite #ammonites #cephalopod #cephalopods
