HMRC has asked us to alert members to a scam which is targeting taxpayers and seems to be aimed at the elderly in particular. We have been asked to share the following information: ‘There is currently a telephone scam where a recorded message is left, allegedly from HMRC, stating that HMRC are bringing a lawsuit against the individual and is going to sue them. The recipient is asked to phone 0161 8508494 and press “1” to speak to the officer dealing with the case. This scam i...s becoming widely reported and seems to be targeting older people. Please do not reply to the message. ‘HMRC takes security very seriously but you need to be alert. If you cannot verify the identity of the person making the call you should not disclose your personal details. You should report these incidents on the Action Fraud website, or you can call them on 0300 123 2050 (Please note this number will be charged at your normal network rate). NS&I cuts savings rates:
The number of Premium Bond prizes is to be reduced, and National Savings & Investments is also cutting savings rates on a number of its products. From June 2016, the chances of winning a Premium Bond prize will change from 26,000 to one, to 30,000 to one. The savings rates on Direct Isas, Direct Saver, Income Bonds and the Investment Account will also be cut.

Interest rates held The Bank of England has voted 8-1 to keep interest rates on hold at 0.5%. The bank also lowered its estimate for the UK's economic growth in the third quarter of this year from 0.7% down to 0.6%. Policy makers added that the risks from the slowing Chinese economy had increased since August

FCA to examine pension charges
A study by the Telegraph has found savers who use the new pension freedoms to withdraw money face charges of up to £3,000 a year. Some customers are expected to pay as much as £400 to have their funds paid out in cash, while savers who want part of their pension will incur fees of up to £150 per withdrawal. Martin Wheatley, chief executive of the FCA, indicated to the paper that the watchdog would investigate if charges flouted official guidelines.

Record number of young people start SMEs
Research firm Duedil and small business network Enterprise Nation have found that young people are starting small businesses in record numbers, with 247,049 companies founded by the under–35’s in 2013 compared with 145,104 in 2006. The figures show that 74% of these new firms are created by men, while just 26% are founded by women. Separate research from UnLtd found more than 55% of young people aged 16 to 25 now want to set up their own firm while a study from Santander estimated that 80,000 British university students run a business.
