Netherhall School - Back to School!
Dear Parents / Guardians, I hope you have had a good summer break and the children are ready and looking forward to returning to school, I suspect parents and guardians are!
... Monday the 3rd of September is an INSET day for school staff only. However, the school uniform shop – West Lakes Embroidery, which is sited at school reception, will be open from 9.00am onwards for parents / guardians to address school uniform issues. The school uniform shop will be open all morning on Tuesday and from 8.00am-10.00am on subsequent mornings. If parents / guardians are unable to make any of these times, Lyndsay Routledge - the proprietor of West Lakes Embroidery is available to meet parents / guardians and students on an as-required arrangement. School starts on Tuesday 4th of September for students at regular school times; therefore students are expected in school before 8.30am and school will conclude at 3.00pm.
After the organisational preliminaries for students with their form tutors: timetables, homework diaries, assembly with the Headteacher, etc. Lessons will begin as usual, period 3, which is directly after break. Students should attend school equipped for lessons.
I am looking forward to the beginning of the new academic year and the exciting possibilities for our – Netherhall School students and what the next year can bring them. I am certain that we will build on the excellent work of the previous years and that our students will continue to fulfil their considerable potential.

Netherhall School - Golden Apples
Netherhall School has been selected as one of the three finalists for the Cumbrian Secondary School of the Year at the prestigious Golden Apple Awards.
The awards ceremony will be held at Carlisle Racecourse in October.
... The nomination and selection of Netherhall School is the 'icing on the cake' for what has been a stellar school year: The first-ever overall Ofsted rating of Good; the only school in the North of England to have had its Directive Academy Order revoked; one of only five secondary school nationally to have achieved this feat; a superb set of A Level and GCSE results for Netherhall School students.
The nomination and selection is testimony to the outstanding endeavour of our students, the dedication of the school staff, the enduring support of our parents and the community of Maryport.

Netherhall School - GCSE RESULTS
I am delighted to inform you that Year 11 students attained an excellent set of GCSE results in what are universally agreed as having been challenging circumstances for students, due to the increased frequency of examinations, challenge of the examination content and the difficulty of examination questions.
Many students attained the very highest grade – a Grade 9 in a range of subjects and the number of students attaining a good pass in both ...English and maths has risen again. I am delighted that Netherhall School students have the qualification they require to progress on to the next stage of their lives.
A huge thank you to all the students for their continued effort and endeavour throughout their schooling, the teachers for consistently going above what was expected and the parents for their unstinting support for their children and the school. There are a record number of Year 11 students entering the Netherhall School sixth form and I look forward to the new academic year with energy and enthusiasm.

Netherhall School - Geography Field Trip - Honister
Year 10 GCSE geographers had an excellent day ‘in the field’ on Tuesday 10th of July, completing part of their GCSE coursework, conducting a river survey on Gatesgarthdale Beck in the spectacular Honister Pass and Buttermere Valley.
The field trip involved lots of measuring, recording and getting one’s feet wet. The Netherhall School students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and learned a lot about the formation of rivers.
... Well done to all the staff and students involved, who displayed an excellent work ethic, interest in geography and who represented the school magnificently.

Netherhall School - Treasure Hunters
Mr Bell took a group of young treasure-hunters metal detecting on the Netherhall School site. The school is sited on an ancient Roman Road, so expectations were high and Mr Bell did not disappoint.
Keane Morrison was first with a two pence piece; however, Callum Todd quickly followed this with a 1671 Charles 2nd mark – equivalent to a shilling in old money!
... Well done, Callum.

Netherhall School - Awards Day School awards day is always a special day. It is an opportunity for the school to see its ethos and values in action. Be Honest. Be Kind. Work Hard. It is always a pleasure to acknowledge achievement, effort, endeavour and excellence. This, however is only half of the story, as students collectively appreciate their peers achievement and it transmits the central messages that you are noticed if you do well, hard work wins every time and that i...t is ‘cool’ to do well.
Well done to all those students who received awards, well done to all of the students for their active participation in the awards day and a huge thank you to Linda Radcliffe and all of our guests.

Netherhall Schoool - A Level Results 2018
I am delighted to be able to inform you that Year 13 students have produced an excellent set of A level results this year. Academic results have shown improvement at all levels and based on last year's progress figures would place us as the 3rd highest performing Sixth Form in the West Cumbria consortium.
We are delighted with the sustained improvement shown in the Sixth Form over the last 2 years and the fact that our results confirm... the "Good" rating for our Sixth Form provision awarded by Ofsted in February.
We would like to congratulate all Year 13 leavers for a fantastic performance and wish them all the very best in the next stage of their careers, either at university level or in their GEN II apprenticeships.
Mr M. D. Bailey. Deputy Headteacher / Head of Sixth Form.

Netherhall School - Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award - The Great Glen – The Canoe Challenge.
Each year we have a new group of students that wish to participate in Gold Duke of Edinburgh and I always feel that it is nice to do something different from the usual. That is why instead for walking for four days, I like to offer a canoe trip (next year there could be a bike trip on offer).
This year we set off from Dores (near Inverness) on a very sunny day. The students set themsel...ves up into rafted groups, whilst they found their feet, and not before long they got to grips with paddling in straight lines.
Over the expedition, I am pleased to say that they covered just short of 80km and travelled almost to Fort William which is incredible. I am really pleased with this year’s cohort as they persevered and covered the distance without complaint or issue. In fact, over the four days, they experienced harsh weather conditions, tick bites, midges, rough water and fatigue. Through all of this they kept their resolve and sense of humour, looked after themselves and each other.
My highlights of the trip included:
- Watching the England semi-final from an IPad on the shore of Lock Lochy (situated 1km paddle from the nearest road).
- Sailing almost the entire length of Loch Lochy, whilst rafted together and using a tarp as an improvised sail.
- The students cooking for themselves and being completely independent in everything they did.
- Each night sitting around a camp fire and talking about future aspirations.
I would also like to thank Miss Satterthwaite and Mr Norris for the help they provided. Without staff volunteering and putting their personal time into such events they simply wouldn’t be able to happen. So thank you all.

Netherhall School - Mountain Biking
I had the pleasure of running another mountain biking trip in the last week of term.
This time I chose to be a little more adventurous and took them on a trail to a remote part of Skiddaw. During the trip they experienced tough up hills, technical riding, exposure and some of the best downhill riding the Lakes has to offer. To top off a brilliant day, we also visited the pump track to hone our jump skills.
... I really believe that the students we have are some of the best in Cumbria. All of them worked hard and I believe they walked away from the trip wanting to experience more.
Next academic year, we are going to be riding to Whinlatter to experience the Tour of Britain, which again will be a fantastic experience as the students will be exposed to the professional side of cycling.
