About New Room Bristol

The New Room /John Wesley's Chapel in Bristol is the oldest Methodist chapel in the world (originally built in 1739 and extended in 1748) and the cradle of the early Methodist movement.

We are temporarily closed due to the ongoing coronavirus situation.

New Room Bristol Description

The chapel is open to visitors throughout the year and is set out as it was in the Wesleys' time. The preachers' rooms upstairs now contain the MLA accredited museum, including John Wesley's private rooms.

Exciting news – the New Room and Bristol Methodists will be featured on BBC One on Easter Sunday! ‘Britain’s Easter Story’ is a two part programme (scheduled for Good Friday at 9am and Easter Sunday at 9.10am) which explores the stories behind Easter traditions, looking at how different celebrations have developed over the years and how music remains a big part of those celebrations. Charles Wesley’s hymn ‘Christ the Lord is Risen Today’ features in the Easter Sunday programme. Freedom Choir conductor Karen Gibson visited the New Room and Charles Wesley’s House in Bristol to film a segment for the programme and local Methodists are featured singing the hymn in the chapel. Look out for us on BBC One or find the programme on BBC iPlayer.

This place meets all needs: the peace and history of the Chapel: behind it the lovely, reasonably-priced cafe selling such tempting cakes and the bright sunny Conference Room and education suite. I attanged a1day conference for 40 people and it went so well.

Thank you Louise and other New Room staff.

The New Room is an oasis of calm in the midst of a busy city, a spot where Christian history and grace come together, where you are invited to sit and be at peace in a place made sacred by the prayers and hymns of thousands of Methodists for well over 200 years. It may sound overly dramatic, but visiting here just may be the start of transforming your life.
