#funfactfriday
"There are as many atoms in a grain of sand as there are grains of sand on all the beaches in the world, and there are as many grains of sand on all the beaches in the world as there are stars in in the observable universe."
Thanks to #NSLive2019 speaker Claire Burke for this fun fact from her 'Me and My Telescope' segment in last week's New Scientist.

The major source of pollution in our oceans comes from rivers, if we stand any hope of cleaning up our oceans then we need to clean up the source. Can we calculate how to do this? Mathematician Tom Crawford will be sharing a mathematical model for river outflows with the goal of predicting which areas are most susceptible to pollution from rivers and thus coordinate an effective clean-up operation.
Tom’s talk will be on our Engineering Stage, Friday 11th October

Autonomous robots are beginning to make their way out of the laboratory and into our lives, in the form of autonomous vehicles, surgical assistants and warehousing robots. In this open world, these systems are very much intermingled with our human friends and co-workers. How do we design these systems so they are safe, and their interactions with us are trustworthy and dependable?
Find out more at more from robotic engineer, Subramanian Ramamoorthy, Saturday 12th October on our Technology Stage.
