Which is a world leading collaboration of research scientists, engineers, medical doctors and teaching professionals who deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in medicine, dentistry and health sciences.

The faculty is a recognised national centre of excellence which brings together internationally respected research in clinical care, basic science and engineering in an innovative environment. It excels in tackling challenges in health and healthcare.

The key areas of focus for the faculty include ageing, stem cells, cancer, cell biology, genetics, drug development, medicine in society, and neuroscience.

Medicine is concerned with the training of knowledgeable, caring, competent and skilful professionals, who understand health and disease.

The origins of Newcastle University can be traced to the establishment in 1834 of a School of Medicine. Look back in our timeline for further historical points of interest. Throughout its modern history, Newcastle has been at the forefront of curriculum innovation in medicine and our integrated approach sweeps away the traditional separation between pre-clinical and clinical training, bringing you into contact with patients from the start of the course.

There are two courses to choose from:

Medicine and Surgery MBBS Honours- the 5 year programme which is designed to provide a general medical education for all types of doctor, which will serve as the foundation for later career specialisation. The structure of this degree means that students develop core knowledge alongside clinical competence, supported by visits to general practice and hospitals and contact with patients from the first year.

Medicine and Surgery (Accelerated Programme) MBBS Honours - the four year programme which is designed for graduates of any discipline who wish to train as a doctor, and others whose prior professional experience qualifies them for entry. Students on this course follow a case-led approach with clinical cases introduced as the ‘trigger’ to ensure a problem-first, task-based focus to their learning. They then join with the third year (Stage 3) of the 5 year programme to complete the final three years.

We have a partnership with Durham University which means students can apply to spend Phase I (Stages 1 and 2) either at Newcastle University or at Durham University’s Queen’s Campus in Stockton.
