"We implemented a lot of changes for this year’s event, the biggest one being moving the home of the event into Builth Wells town centre, and it’s been a great success. The aim was to introduce rallying to a new audience and to bring trade into Builth and it seems to have done the trick. There was a great atmosphere in the Service Park and all the competitors and spectators that I spoke to really enjoyed it. The event itself ran to time and everything ran very smoothly, so full marks to Quinton Motor Club for putting on another fantastic event. We are looking forward to doing more of the same in 2020."

The Mobil 1 Rally Challenge was brought in in 1989 by BBC Sport’s Grandstand feature as part of its motorsport coverage of World and British level rallying at the time. In the pre-Burns/McRae era, rallying wasn’t particularly well supported on UK television networks and the only real way you could see British rallying in those days was to pack a flask of hot tea and march into the countryside to see the cars go by.
The Mobil 1 Rally Challenge offered - for its time - excellen...t coverage of both exterior shots and onboard footage. The second (and final) running of this feature was 1990, and the Isle of Man finale featured Pentti Airikkala and John Meadows in the Ford Sierra Cosworth, and a youthful looking pairing of Malcolm Wilson and Nicky Grist, also in a Sierra!
Airikkala led by a 1 second advantage over Malcolm and Nicky into the stage, with Wilson due to run first, the pressure was on. The last stage featured a now well documented run over the Tholt-Y-Will Special Stage. The onboard footage from the stage start shows Malcolm asking Nicky to deliver the notes with full throttle. A slow start off the start line didn’t help, but an exceptionally fast second half of the 2.54 mile stage put Wilson/Grist in good stead for victory.
A storming start by the Finn however, lessened the chances of a Wilson win, but a few small mistakes in the latter section of the stage by Airikkala meant that Malcolm and Nicky won the challenge by just 2 seconds.

This year's Quinton Motor Club organised Nicky Grist Stages, which is based in Builth Wells, has received a magnificent 130 car entry! Euan Thorburn Rallying and Paul Beaton could be crowned BTRDA Rally Gold Star champions on the event, while there are big battles on-going for the Pirelli Welsh Rally Championship overall and class honours. It's also a round of the Fiesta ST Trophy.
