NEWS FROM NORBURY
MORE BOATS THROUGH HILLMORTON - VOLUNTEERS CELEBRATE RECORD YEAR
Volunteer lock keepers are celebrating a record year on the Oxford Canal after they ‘helped their 10,000th boater through Hillmorton Locks’, according to Canal & River Trust.
... It says: “Our volunteers recently celebrated the milestone at Hillmorton, the busiest flight of locks on the nation’s canal network.”
In 2017 the busiest site on the system was recorded by C&RT as Locks 2&3, Hillmorton, near Rugby on the Oxford Canal, which saw a total of 9,552 lockages through the paired locks at this location, about the same as 2016.
If 10,000 boats have passed through two months before the year ends in December it shows the locks have been considerably busier than usual, probably because of substantial closures on other parts of the system hit by drought and major breaches, such as Middlewich and Liverpool.
The 10,000th boat through, NB Faithful, is owned by John & Gill Speight who had spent recent months visiting Market Harborough and Watford. They were presented with a special certificate recognising the landmark by volunteer lock keepers Maurice Farndon and Vince Laramy.
It is, of course, unlikely that volunteers have physically assisted, or even seen, more than a share of the 10,000 boats, despite C&RT’s claim, as the locks are not manned full time.
Maurice Farndon, volunteer lock keeper at Hillmorton, said: "It's good to know that we have helped so many boaters, many of whom were first time boaters who, having learned how locks work and how to get the most out of their canal experience, have then gone on and enjoyed their holiday even more. The more confident you are the more enjoyment and relaxation you will get out of being on the canal and so it’s really rewarding to be part of that.
"The big secret is that we as volunteer lock keepers get as much enjoyment as our customers. It's also good to be engaging with more and more people on the towpath, and what a difference it makes working with such a good team as the Hillmorton lockies."
Adnan Saif, the new Midlands regional director for the Trust said: "It’s fantastic that Hillmorton has seen such a bumper year. There’s something very relaxing and therapeutic about watching boats go up and down the locks so local people are really lucky to have such a boating hotspot on their doorsteps.
"It’s also a great achievement for our amazing volunteer lock keepers and I would like to thank them for their hard work over the course of the year. They play such an important role locally, welcoming visitors, pointing out the nearest shops and pubs and helping to make the canalside a really attractive place for people living nearby to escape to."

NEWS FROM NORBURY
AVOID THE BREAD FOR THE DUCKS’ SAKE
Norbury is a favourite place for families to walk by the canal and feed the ducks and, as winter approaches there is no doubt that it will help keep the wildfowl healthy – but Canal & River Trust is again stressing the need to avoid the traditional loaf of white bread and feed them healthy treats.
... With shorter, darker days, ducks and other wild waterfowl need the public’s help to supplement their natural food source, when plants and flowers begin to die back and become scarcer, but C&RT says: “Every year millions of loaves of bread are thrown into canals and rivers up and down the country - potentially polluting the water and damaging the homes of hundreds of thousands of ducks and other waterfowl who live on our waterways.”
Uneaten soggy bread can cause a build-up of bad nutrients which can lead to greater algae growth, spread disease and encourage pests such as rats.
The Trust says throwing bread into a canal or river can create overcrowding, as bird populations flock to the same location in search of their starchy treat. Too many ducks or waterfowl in one place can stress the birds and lead to their habitats being damaged. It also creates excessive amounts of bird poo which is smelly and slippery underfoot.
Peter Birch, National Environment Policy Advisor for the Trust, said: "This is the perfect time of year to get out with the family and enjoy the waterways but also help the hundreds of thousands of ducks who live on our canals and rivers.
"Please do it sensibly. We’d like people to make a few simple changes on their visit to feed the ducks. Bread’s not great for a duck’s health as it’s nothing like their natural diet so don’t over feed them with large quantities of it. Try to vary what you give them and swap it for healthier more natural treats like oats, corn, defrosted frozen peas or cut up leftover veg. Also exercise portion control.
"Don’t follow the crowds, spread the love, and visit a new family of ducks to prevent large quantities of food from clogging up the same places and potentially damaging the environment."
Norbury Wharf has long been aware of the need for healthy duck food and its canalside shop and cafe has seed-based duck food on sale.
This can replace the insects and grass ducks normally eat as these are more difficult to find in the winter when the ground is often frozen. Leftover greens including kale, cabbage and lettuce are also great alternatives.
Peter Birch thinks duck feeding has double benefits: "Your visit to the canal will be good for the ducks’ wellbeing and good for your wellbeing. We often go into a human hibernation and stay indoors more as winter approaches but this is a great way of getting the family out for some fresh air."

NEWS FROM NORBURY
STEPS REOPENED AS BRIDGE STOPPAGE IMMINENT
A decision by Canal & River Trust to open up a set of steps - closed years ago because of safety fears – in order to give pedestrians and others a towpath route is a reminder that the bridge at Norbury Wharf is being closed to boat traffic for almost the whole of November.
... The Trust is bringing in contractors as it says repairs are needed to “missing brickwork in towpath side washwall”, although there is little visual evidence of any problem.
The steps from the road, alongside the bridge were closed after someone fell down them and C&RT was threatened with legal action. Now a team from the local depot have used picks and shovels to clear the clay and earth that were used to cover the steps and have opened up the boarded-over gap to the road.
This will allow pedestrians to walk the towpath without passing under Bridge 38 on the Shropshire Union Canal and there are also plans to pump water past the repair work during the works from November 5 to 30.
Fabric dams will be used to drain the section of canal under the bridge and allow the bricks to be repaired, but boats will have to wind in Grub Street cutting and at Norbury Wharf.
Norbury Wharf Director David Ray said: “We had very little notice of this and there is little doubt it will impact our customers. Our hire boats operate throughout the year and will only be able to head south and some of our boating customers will find it difficult to access our facilities such as fuel and pump outs.
“We are putting in alternative arrangements where we can, but this is disappointing, especially coming after the breach on the Middlewich Arm, which has also affected cruising from Norbury.” Meanwhile Norbury News will be keeping an eye on the work as it progresses, with regular pictures from the site as the work gets under way.

We went on the Shropshire Star 10/6/17 and enjoyed a lovely Saturday evening cruise with delicious fish and chips, piping hot too, a little cramped but well worth it for a most enjoyable time. We will definitely be booking another. Thank you, the staff were really helpful, opening the front doors for hubby to take some nice photos of the Herons, and a lovely cup of tea for me.

We went on the 'canal cruise' on Saturday night. It was lovely, being 33 weeks pregnant I did have a little panic when saw the width of the barge and didn't think I'd be able to waddle through, but there was plenty of room and I was comfortable enough for the journey sat at the table :) even after our fish & chips, which was a very generous portion!!

Would definitely recommend a visit to here! We will be returning even if it's just to visit the tea room, which we didn't realise was there!

Thank you!

After saying that it was a great evening out, staff did a great job even making sure every one in party’s sat near each other. Fish and chips were very fresh and extremely hot. Great value for money.

Next time will be during daylight hours.

We had a lovely time on the fish & chip cruise yesterday Saturday 10th of Feb 2018. Love staff to have a giggle with the barge was nice and comfortable although a little chilly to start but soon warmed up. The fish & chips were very tasty and just enough. On board bar serving wine beers tea and coffee. We were sat next to a lovely couple Mr & Mrs Hunt who we chatted with for most of the trip and found out they were caravaners just like ourselves so had plenty to chat about. All in all a wonderfull trip and a big thumps up to the staff and organisers we will Defo do it again.

Thanks

Very enjoyable trip down the canal. The fish and chips were delicious. Only downside was having queued to get on the boat our names were nearly last to be called out. Due to larger groups getting priority. Also a group of people opened a window opposite me and I was freezing for the whole trip. Not great on a cold February day. Otherwise a great time was had by all. Thanks.

Lovely afternoon a fish and chip cruise. Welcoming staff, and Lucy onboard was very good. Only thing that spoilt it was a family with four children who were clearly bored and couldn't wait to get off. Up and down to toilet and bar every few minutes , playing games on phone and being noisy. But fish and chips were delicious. Shame Lucy forgot the milk for the tea , lol !
