About Norfolk County Banjo Co.

The UK's only production banjo manufacturer, hand-built in Britain.

Norfolk County Banjo Co. Description

Shackleton Instruments (a division of The Shackleton Design & Manufacturing Company) is proud to be restarting a manufacturing industry that has been dormant in the UK for more than 60 years. In 2012 we launched the superbly reviewed, limited-edition Islander Ash Leaf banjo. And in 2013 we followed popular demand to create The Shackleton, the first affordable British banjo in well over half a century. The Shackleton Banjo caused a worldwide stir through its Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign, which was in the top 2% most successful Kickstarter campaigns ever. And handmade Shackleton banjos are not only unique but also designed to be the best playing and sounding banjos in their price bracket in the world. Designed and manufactured by hand in Great Britain.

Custom Mahogany 12" Aurora getting a set up, ready to ship soon!

Hope everyone is having a merry Christmas holiday, and hope you all have a good New Year!

When we're not making we're rebuilding, repairing reconditioning, or restoring. We've had a lot of old British Banjos in the last few months. 100 + years old some of these instruments and hopefully now good for another 100.

This custom Mahogany Aurora with Ebony tonering and 12" pot is really starting to come together this week. Loving the combination of woods with the brass hardware.

User

Already pretty noisy on the lathe can't wait to hear how this 12" mahogany pot with ebony tonering turns out!

User

Another fine old English banjo needing a little TLC on the bench this week

User

Custom 12" Aurora pot on the lathe last night. Mahogany, with an Ebony tonering. Gonna sound amazing!

User

This Tenor Aurora is just about ready to head off to its new home

User

Finally got this Abbot on the bench and stripped it down to have a good look at the neck before I begin any fret work. There's been a questionable neck reset in its past and I need to work out how this is affecting the action before I start doing any work on the frets

User

The things you find yourself doing. It's a funny old game.

A recent long neck banjo in walnut and ebony being set up - if anyone can name the pipe tune I've transposed (crucified), we'll send the first two a free shackleton banjo strap.
And remember - beauty is in the ear of the beholder, so please be gentle! (And if you can't be gentle, be careful)

On pot duty tonight - 12" mahogany, 11" ash and 8" walnut banjo pots beginning to take shape.
"One day my child, you will be ROUND!"
Anyone else talk to their projects...?

User

Our Aurora banjo has had some customisation here; including some abalone inlay, an inlaid armrest, and - most importantly - extra width at the nut,to allow the customer some extra room for comfortable fingering.

User

New motor finally arrived for the surfacer. Now we can get back to making banjos!

The Doomsday Device is operational....
