About Norman Records

UK record store selling records, CDs and tapes.

Norman Records Description

In the beginning (1995-1999)

Norman Records was born in 1995 when Phil set up the business in the attic of his terraced house in the Hyde Park area of Leeds.

Initially selling via ads in Record Collector magazine, by 1997 Phil was employing extra members of staff to deal with the volume of parcels that were being carted off to the local post office.

First record sold? No idea. "Probably something by Cows, " according to Phil.

The early years (1999-2003)

In 1999, with a bedroom ceiling beginning to sag due to the sheer weight of vinyl upon it, office premises were found in an old Victorian school in Armley, Leeds. This is where the story really begins. Using an ancient, wheezing, dial-up internet connection a basic website was built (still available! ) offering the latest releases at low prices with super-fast shipping.

The 'famous' Norman Records reviews started around this time, mainly written by Phil as other members of staff shouted their opinions from across the room. Eventually staff were writing their own reviews providing passionate, knowledgeable and idiosyncratic opinions.

As night follows day, the extra space available led to a huge increase in the amount of stock we started to hold. To cope with the sheer number of records needing packing and reviewing, more staff were gradually employed.

The difficult teenage period (2003-2010)

The decline of physical sales that began in the early 2000s presented challenges. We kept on finding the best new music out there. We kept plugging away at the reviews. And whilst we kept refining the site (making it as simple and fast as we could) we resisted the siren calls of the download markets, stuck to our guns, and continued to support the physical formats.

Traffic rose, we were able to ride out the slump, and found ourselves at the forefront of a vinyl revival. . .

Leaving school (2010-now)

In 2010 we outgrew the antiquated Armley school and moved to larger premises in a brutalist 60s council building in Holbeck, 15 minutes from the centre of Leeds. Fun times.

As well offering a much bigger space for the ever-growing stockroom, the move allowed us to officially open to the public. Although not a store in the conventional sense (far from it) customers can not only walk in and buy but ’click and collect’ ofter ordering online. A bit like an Argos for vinyl lovers.

Having a physical presence also allows us to take part in Record Store Day, the first of which was a cold, frantic morning in April 2013 when crowds snaked down the stairs and out the doors of the building.

Future
Who knows?

We are proud to have been trading for 22 years and proud that the same ideals we started out with are still in place today. And as long as you lovely folk keep buying records, we'll keep selling and reviewing them.

JUST IN: Melvins – ‘Pinkus Abortion Technician’
They once had two drummers, now they have two bass players. The Melvins team up with Jeff Pinkus of similar creators of frenzied noisey goodness, the inimitable Butthole Surfers. And yes, that title is a reference to the Surfer’s iconic ’87 album.
We’ve got the record in on the twin 10’’ LP set, with one record in oxblood, and the other in teal blue.

Japan were one of the most daring groups to come out of the broad new wave genre. We’ve picked out these classic records from David Sylvian and co., their final two albums before they went their separate ways.
On the left is their swansong ‘Tin Drum’, and on the right we have ‘Gentlemen Take Polaroids’. Both these reissues are remastered so you can listen to their era defining avant-synth-pop in hi-def.

PRE-ORDER: Mort Garson – ‘Mother Earth's Plantasia’
‘Mother Earth’s Plantasia’ is one of those oddball cult classic records, and it’s going to be reissued this Summer courtesy of Sacred Bones. Subtitled “warm earth music for plants…and the people that love them”, ‘Plantasia’ went out of print, but developed a rapid cult following amongst the green fingered and record collectors alike. Mort Garson creates pleasant synth ditties for the duration of ‘Mother Earth's Plantasia’, s...ounding like a fusion of early electronic and ambient with a healthy watering of space age pop.
We’ve got it available to pre-order on the limited edition green colour variant, as well as black wax and CD.

usually my next port of call if an album I am after from the club ac30 guys has sold out...they package the records well also...to be recommended...

User

quite simply, one of the best - if not *the* best - music mailorder around. cannot recommend it enough.

User

When I took a job working from home three days a week with the the other two in Pudsey I had no idea I was within 15mins of Norman Records! Lovely people and very helpful - thanks to Joan and the other Norms for offering a click and collect service 😁

User

The best. It's as simple as that really. Most customer focused shop I've ever seen.

User

Really pleased with my first online order. I had ordered two 7" singles, one of which was due to take 5-28 days to be delivered as it wasn't in stock. This wasn't a problem as the single was for me and I was happy to wait, as I was pleased to find a stockist within the UK more than anything. I received the first single within 48 hours of placing the order. And then the second single was then delivered the very next day, despite the quoted delivery time. Brilliant service and really happy with my purchases. I'll be ordering the rest in the series of singles on pay day!

User

Quite simply the best online record shop. The staff know their shit and aren't afraid to completely pan a deserving target in their reviews. Shipping is top notch too, if something is out on Monday and you have it pre-ordered you'll usually find it on your doorstep on the Saturday before release.

Great bunch of lads.

User

Norman Records is obviously ace in every way, but I must take issue with young Clinton regarding an aspect of the Invaderband album review. I am from LANCASHIRE and any further suggestions of my origin being YORKSHIRE will be heavily frowned upon and possibly challenged in court.

Regards, Adam Leonard (Invaderband singer).

User

Never let me down. Always upfront with information on your order and if it's taking longer than usual there plenty of info as to why so no qualms there either! Infact latest 2 vinyls duly arrived today after 3 weeks wait and plenty of updates!

User

My package was recently returned to Norman from Germany, and after sympathising with my frustration at the incompetence of Deutsche Post, they very kindly offered to resend it for FREE with it being my first order with Norman. It certainly won't be the last. Thanks, Norman.

User

Just bought Simone Felice's Strangers from here on vinyl, online. Great price, super fast delivery (1-2 days) even though I was a cheapskate and opted for Royal Mail 1st Class and arrived well packaged and in perfect condition. Also got a discount off future purchases as a first time buyer! Subscribed to the e-mail updates too which are entertaining and informative. Everything a record store should be. I'll be back

User

I ordered the taxi driver soundtrack a week ago, think the release date was delayed though. Norman records kept me informed with regular emails about the status of my purchase, it arrived today in very sturdy packaging, and i am absolutely made up with my vinyl! Will definitely be using Norman records again!

User

I have ordered many a record from Norman (even though I could get probably get them from any number of record stores in town). They beat everyone to the punch on new music release info and have the best (and cleanest looking) e-newsletter that I subscribe to.

Norman Records is legit af.

User

I have made multiple purchases through Norman Records, and they are very professional and accommodating. For example, I ordered 4 LP's through them, and one was a pre-order. I emailed them asking cancel the pre-order, and they refunding me for that album the next day, and mailed off the remaining 3 LP's to me. I can't recommend highly enough how fantastic they have been. Thanks, Norman Records!

User

Faster than I thought, easy to do, good offers and Great for Finding something new,,,, if you have an Odd Fiver

User

Best online shop ever. Super fast, friendly, professional, sarcastic, and most importantly not over priced. Awesome.

User

Before I ordered the CD I need to ask a few questions about the delivery and the item itself. All was answered well and with quick response.

It arrived well packaged.

Happy to have it!

User

Amazing service as always! Got a buzz at the door from the postie this morning after only ordering these 2 days ago.

Keep up the good work!!

User

A great shop! The orders get packed as though they have to survive a nuclear disaster and that is simply the one thing you want from an online shop. Next to that, they know their music.

User

Awesome customer experience... only reason they aren't 5 is that they advertise stuff which can actually take them several weeks to get into stock. If you're patient they are the record shop for you!
