The North East Land, Sea and Air Museums (NELSAM), is an entirely volunteer-run transport museum situated on the site of the former RAF Usworth /Sunderland Airport, between Washington and Sunderland, England.
The museum has the largest aviation collection between Yorkshire and Scotland and houses over 30 aircraft and a wide collection of aero engines, as well as the Military Vehicle Museum, formerly based in Newcastle upon Tyne, which holds a collection of WW2 and post war vehicles.
The museum also has a collection of other items such as weaponry, military vehicles, trams & buses, and other historical exhibits. A collection of fire appliances was added to the collection and the North East Electric Transport Trust have been working on preparing their collection of trams ready to open this year.
Special exhibitions cover the WW2 Blitz and 607 County of Durham Squadron Royal Auxiliary Air Force formed at RAF Usworth.
For 2017, a new WW1 Display will be unveiled.

School and group visits can be arranged, please contact for further details.

The WW1 Morane fighter build has made the front cover of Early Aero Magazine with a full article inside about the Morane and Ridley.

User

Not only are we at the Sunderland Airshow this year, we are also up at RAF Boulmer assisting with their Families Day

User

Some of the team set up at the Sunderland International Airshow with the Morane Saulnier Type N "Bullet" adjacent to Wing Commander Ridley's childhood home. Despite the thunder and heavy rain, they are in high spirits and looking forward to the rest of the weekend.

The Morane WW1 fighter was out and about this weekend;

The museum was represented in Seaburn this weekend with the Ferret for armed forces day - here's our display, complete with a 'gun dog'!

6 Fire engines from the fire brigade onsite today for an aircraft crash exercise involving the Trident

... And here's the team with the Morane in Durham, basking in the sunshine!

User

Today the museum Morane WW1 fighter replica will be on Palace Green in Durham - it is taking centre stage on the North East Salute to the RAF on the 100th anniversary year. At 12:30 a Spitfire will perform a flypast, and there is a service in the Cathedral at 2pm with a march afterwards.

The Morane WW1 Fighter build visited the Frontline Sedgefield event at the weekend, looking good in the sun! Join the group for more about the project: https://facebook.com/groups/1542455922698 006

We're proud to have an exhibit from the museum in the '100 Objects North' project - this features 100 objects from the north of England, with their associated stories, together telling a history of Northern England. Our 'object' is the 1940s WWII Searchlight, manufactured here in the North East. The WW1 fighter build was admired by many of the crowd at Cosford, shown here bright and early before anyone arrived at the show. The team were dressed appropriately for the occasion as well! Thanks to all involved and we look forward to taking it out on the next trip!

User

Here's the Morane WW1 fighter project being displayed at RAF Cosford for the RAF 100 anniversary celebrations. Looking fantastic with one wing covered and painted, can't wait to see our when finished!

User

The Mk6 Salamander fire engine arriving at the museum after spending at least 20 years in a lockup. This type of appliance was used extensively by the RAF during the 1960s - including locally at Catterick, Leeming and Linton-on-Ouse - and has the same chassis as the Saracen and Saladin that are on display in the military Romney onsite - probably one of the first times all three of these Alvis types have been in the same location.

Very special collectors coins, get your hands on the limited edition coin (only 319 made) before they're all gone! All available at https://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/nelsam_digital … or message us for other options.

User

a really cool place to go , plenty to see, trams, busses military vehicles, helicopters and planes, especially the street scene with manikin in uniforms etc, really nice people running it also a must for the family

User

Well worth a visit, especially to walk round and under the Vulcan. There is a really wide range of exhibits, some of them local. An interesting collection of aircraft plus the military vehicles.

User

We live a mile away and never knew this place was here, and had no idea it would be as good. The kids loved it, plenty to do and see for a decent price. They definitely need to advertise the place better as I just dont think people know it is there

User

We had a great day out thanks to all the staff and volunteers at the museum. There’s a great collection of planes and vehicles to keep all entertained. Keep up the good work 👍

User

This was a superb day out that didn't break the bank. They clearly do a lot with a limited budget, and are doing their best to preserve out aviation heritage. Staff are knowledgeable and helpful. Well worth the trip.

User

This stunning little museum is packed full of gems, history, and tales from a time that should be respected more. Our little boy had a guided tour by Linda a volunteer there and she must see a thousand kids there but she gave all her time and attention to him, like he was the only that had ever been there. What a fantastic place to visit. Thanks so much

User

Thanks to the staff today at the museum for the marvellous way they looked after Dominic. He had a fantastic experience and loved every second. Staff were so helpful. Definitely be back for another visit.

User

People need to come and support this little gem! A bit of sponsorship from some of you big companies wouldn't go amiss either! Right on our doorstep since the 80s and no-one knows its here!

User

My 11yr old absaloutly loved it because he has a interest I'd say it's not for young ones. It's freezing. Staff are lovely will answer any questions.

Would go back !

User

Much better than I thought. Staff were really friendly and helpful. Loved walking through the 'old street' was amazing the things you had on show. Be coming back with the parents - they will love it . Thanks and keep up the good work

User

I too wasn't aware of this place. I only found out by an internet search looking for something to keep my young grandson entertained. Easy to find with carparking close to the entrance. Dedicated, enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteers who are available to answer any questions or just have a chat. My grandson was very pleased when he was allowed access to the vulcan bomber and climbing up to the cockpit and sit in the pilots seat. Expect to see aeroplanes and vehicles in need of repair however with time, support and funding I am sure they will make it into a very good attraction that will see visitor numbers rise.

P.S. Take a picnic and soak up the sun. :)

User

Had a fantastic afternoon at the museum, the kids really enjoyed themselves especially with being able to climb inside the vulcan, the staff were also great, my son thoroughly enjoyed running round and chatting with one of the young lads that works there

User

User

A hidden gem. We’ve passed the sign on the A19 many times but today was the first time we visited. Enthusiastic volunteer staff made us and our two grandsons very welcome. Lots to see, and some excellent examples outside so we will definitely make a return visit to see more in better weather. Interesting artefacts and scenes from life in the WW2 era. Café area with drinks machine and small shop. We’ll keep checking the website for future special events.

User
