About North Laine Brewhouse

Magnificent pub and microbrewery at the heart of Brighton's North Laine

North Laine Brewhouse Description

The North Laine is a magnificent public house, serving the North Laine area, embracing the counter-cultural and community ethos of Brighton’s most colourful and independent quarter. In line with the alternative commercialism made famous in the boutiques and cafés of this vibrant area of the city, the pub of course, brews its own beer. As a temple to the worship of cask ale and continuing a brewing heritage that once saw ten sizable breweries operating in Brighton, the pub contains a state-of-the-art microbrewery from which it will brew a variety of cask ales for the pub’s customers, including the ever popular Laine’s Best.

went for the brewery tour which was both informative and hilarious - 10/10 worth it. the staff were chill and rad as hell, and the beer is phenomenal. thank you my friends, and will hopefully see you all again soon.

YET another, but sadly the last in such an accessible venue, of Judi Thomas' fantastic bodydoodling uv blacklight parties....with top DJ Gareth Jones Arther Shillin, and the doodlecat crew..which I was hugely privileged to be part of this time round, along with beautiful Crysi de Milo, Simon Diamond, balloon modeller Jamie, and Sakhina Monét De-Niro and her lovely mum, amongst other dedicated doodlecats. It was just as well that there were so many hands to help with Judi's final fling at the North Laine pub, as her set up had grown extensively since last time I had attended her play hut there, with impressive firedancers outside(I counted at least 6 on my way up to the brewery) which I have always had a special spot for, and then on the inside, a whole neon painted fence that separated the bodypainting area off from the rest of the pub, surrounded by wooden signage, declaring the intent and purpose of the evening, to create beautiful blacklight body art and to make and have as much mess and glittery fun in the process!! As the signs said "you have been warned", and "no groan ups allowed!!" Stressing the point that no complaints would be tolerated, as after all "when paint splattering on your clothes, there is a risk of paint being splattered on them."...! (Yes, sadly these warnings were indeed necessary, as apparently a previous customer had complained that the paint did not come out of their shirt, leading to a new necessity for warnings and disclaimers before entering the paint zone-seriously!!)

Luckily hazmat suits and white vests were available to buy for those wishing to indulge and not run the risk of permanently painted clothing, as well as bags available for £1 in which to stash any clothes or valuables not wished to enter the firing line of paint, sillystring, bubbles, beer or neon plasticine! The fun kicked off around 11pm in the paint zone, and as the place filled up and the crowds grew the music was as always addictive and impossible not to dance to, and as the paint flew on and the clothes came off, the atmosphere was of fun and inclusiveness, with no one being left out, everyone made to feel beautiful, everyone regardless of age or gender was covered in paint and glittered and made to feel special, without anyone feeling sexualised or objectified, which in the end, is something that no one can put a price on. Judi your nights are spectacular, better than sex, better than money, better than drugs...will someone please buy this woman the bus she needs to take this show on the road?!!

User

We had a hoot yesterday at the bottomless Brunch for my birthday and Alfie was great entertainment. Thank you for accommodating the changes I asked for to my breakfast, you did this with no fuss and produced exactly what I asked for. This made the experience even better and it tasted great! Bar staff were also attentive to our table thanks.

User

Happy to report that really excellent Sunday roasts are back. Super friendly staff and a beer for every palate, NLB are on form :)

User

Great place with a great selection of beers. Izzy who hosts the quiz has always been brilliant whenever I’ve visited (and also does a brilliant quiz on top). Izzy and the team really do an awesome job

User

Just had a wonderful Sunday roast the pork was cooked to perfection very good value for money and the staff were friendly and helpful,we will certainly go there again on our next visit to Brighton

User

£12 for half a chicken and chips. Chicken lacked flavour, unseasoned, and was rather disappointing for £12.

Red Wine gravy was re-heated stock gravy (not red wine) that had been frozen beforehand (you can tell because of how it separates when frozen).

User

Nice interior and nice beer. We were having issues with the DJ, the place was pretty empty but the music was so loud you couldn’t talk, I get that when it’s packed and everyone is dancing, but if there aren’t many people you wanna be able to have a chat! And the DJ basically just said ‘not my problem’. My friend also left her card and they by the time she returned literally 40 mins later they had chopped it up, I get it’s policy but maybe extend the time a bit, 40 mins is a bit short. Overall I do like this pub, and the staff serving me were nice, but just a couple of things could have been better last night.

User

I had high hopes for the bottomless brunch this Saturday morning. We arrived slightly earlier than 11am and had a less then warm welcoming. Once we were allowed in we were told where our table was (it was very dark in the section for bottomless brunch) and settled down on the benches. The bottomless brunch is £25 with entertainment but the staff are not very flexible! I asked to swap mushrooms for an extra egg and the guy serving me said no he couldn't do it. I asked him to double check (I felt for £25 they could make a small swap such as this) - he wandered off and when he came back he hadn't even asked! I asked him to check again - eventually he begrudgingly agreed. You had to pay extra for a tea of coffee yet cocktails were unlimited (?!). When the waitress brought the food over she was sharp and snappy because we didn't respond quick enough about who had ordered what. The food was good though so that was a saving grace to the lack lustre customer service skills! The entertainment was fun with Alfie with bingo, games, and music. Such a shame the staff ruined what could have been a much better experience for the price.

User

1 orange juice & lemonade(pint)a diet Pepsi(pint) £7.95 very expensive for 2 drinks, the roast on Sunday was very nice & good size portions but drinks very overpriced

User

there price listing is misleading, all the beer drinkers I know didn't know you can get a schooner size beer, so you end up getting charged a lot more for a pint because that's what everyone orders, they need to inform their customers better about the different range of sizes they do, plus they over charged on a promotional beer they had, it was disappointing

User

We had our Xmas buffet lunch last week which was sadly shocking to say time least. Definitely not enough food for over 50ppl and the selection was small and dire. Considering the amount paid, I would have been better off at a fast food joint! Frozen stuff from Iceland would have been sufficient considering.

User

Just called in & place completely empty for quick bit to eat to be told fully booked! Most tables booked from 3pm two hours time! Dorset in middle of lanes welcomed us with no problem & normally use the North lanes, so much for our local.

User

11 of us in the group. Only roasts on the menu which was cool as we all fancied it. Great looking bar but absolutely terrible food l, terrible service, terrible attitude from one of the staff. Waited over an hour from the time we ordered to the time a majority got their food and finished it we was still awaiting ours. A couple of us had to wait an extra 10 mins for the pork belly which they switched to a BBQ pulled pork and tried to hide it under the massive Yorkshire (without saying anything) that was crucified pieces of cracking (the size of 2 20 pence pieces) So discussing we didn't eat it any of it...I'm not going to bang on about this one particular staff member but she was rude, obnoxious and should be let go.

End off.

What saved it was one guy who was so apologetic at the end we had all the food ordered removed from the bill as well as a round of drinks on the house.

What can I say we went home hungry, annoyed but a little reassured that there was some human decency left.

User

Very disappointed.

Booked a table in a specific area (which I confirmed face to face with a member of staff who noted it on a tablet 5 days before) for 25 people - so not a small booking.

I arrived to find they hadn't reserved that area, as other people were occupying it, and they had put flyers on different random tables which were not even together.

We had also called ahead to not only confirm the booking but also to confirm that the kitchen was open until 9:30pm as we were all looking forward to ordering nachos and table sharers.

Having arrived at 9pm and been put on the different tables, we were then told the kitchen had closed early with no apology, the staff seemed very unbothered and uninterested.

Terrible service, no communication, as as a Brightonian, embarrassed to have invited my friends there. Will definitely never be booking again.

Would definitely not recommend.

User

Rude staff member confused our tab with another, after she realised the mix up, we immediately offered pay for our £6.60 bill, however she felt it was necessary to say ‘if you do it again you will be thrown out’. She completely ruined our work xmas drinks.

User

Pretty poor experience on Saturday. Went for lunch only to be told 'We're very busy' so wont be serving any food for at least 30 mins . This was at 1.30 and due to their 'bottomless Brunch' apparently!! Anyway it really didnt seem very busy - saw only a couple of other customers of which none were eating (no surpise there) and the staff were falling over themselves to serve customers at the bar.

A little tip for the future, dont put menus on the tables until you are ready to serve..yeah?

User

I booked a surprise birthday bottomless brunch for a friend, we came on the train and travelled over an hour to get here. The website and menus all said they served the bottomless brunch drinks until 3pm, when we arrived they said it was only until 2pm because of the rugby. Being cut short by an hour. The website Still states until 3pm and the menus on our table stated until 3pm. The manager said that they don’t own the website anymore so it’s out of their control and the new menus haven’t been printed yet... I pointed out that both of these were not my fault, so I asked for a bottle of prosecco for the table and he refused! They gave us 7.5% off the total bill, but had we known it was going to be cut short we would have booked somewhere else. They should have called to let me know the advertised times had changed. Really disappointed!

User

Christmas drinks ruined after staff accused us of lying over a simple confusion...genuinely shocked by total lack of service and horrible attitude.
