North London Psychologists Clinic Description

I am the founder of the North London Psychologists' Clinic. I am an experienced Chartered Counselling Psychologist with the British Psychological Society (BPS) and a registered Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Why come to therapy?

Therapy can help you address and overcome your own inner struggles and enable you to move forward in your life. Whether you live with a chronic pain condition, are preparing for bariatric surgery, have a tormented relationship with food, therapy can give you the tools, skills, self-awareness and space to explore how to implement meaningful and lasting change.

You are not alone. . .

Coming to therapy and making that first step can be quite a daunting experience and evoke a range of feelings, which is completely normal and part of the journey. The first step is fostering awareness that as human beings we are all imperfect beings and that being vulnerable in the presence of another person is not a sign of weakness but on the contrary a great sign of courage and strength that will pave the road towards greater self-acceptance.

Interesting segments worth watching by Simon Sinek on Millenials and internet addiction. Most importantly how this affects our interpersonal relationships, communication skills and inability to just be in the present moment. Some of the content is spot on (ie: our need/search for instant gratification) and hopefully you will relate to many of the case examples that he talks about.

Last month there was a terrific BBC 2 Horizon programme led by Dr Michael Mosley called:" The placebo experiment: Can my brain cure my body?"
It confirms what we already know about placebos-that they can have a powerful affect and act in similar ways to strong opioid injections that chronic pain sufferers might take. This is by no means to discredit opioids, but when you watch the following documentary you will see the power of the mind and most importantly the physiological ...and neurochemical changes that transpire in these volunteers when they are taking the placebos. The power of belief surmounts it all!
Let me know your thoughts.

Today is World Mental Health Day and my message to you is to seek help if you are struggling and reach out instead of bottling any painful emotions and ongoing distress inside. Remember you are NOT alone and it’s important to talk about it and not let it fester inside.
I invite you all to watch this moving video by Alan Watts on living our lives to the fullest! This is the perfect message for today and will hopefully inspire or encourage you to implement some changes in your lives.

Very thought provoking and excellent piece by Huffington Post reporter, Michael Hobbes depicting the ongoing stigmatised lived experience around obesity. This permeates into psychological, socio-economic, environmental, cultural and political realms.

Megan Devine, Psychotherapist and Grief Advocate created this great video that I wanted to share with you all on being able to help a grieving friend.
The message can be applied to any form of loss, whether it is health-related, interpersonal losses, relationships, professional, identity or through bereavement.
The key message is is that we have been taught and are socialised to want to problem-solve, sugar coat and make our loved ones feel better.
... However this is not helpful and the most powerful tool is to let them be in their pain and truly listen to them and demonstrate empathy and compassion. As Megan Devine says: 'acknowledgement is the best medicine we have!'

Very poignant, personal and moving article by Owen Jones on grief and dying and the persistent cultural taboo that still pervades today in Anglophone society and veeres us away from talking openly about it. Such an important topic and a shift needs to take place for us to normalise talking about loss, grief and death without trapsing around it in silence.

I would like to invite you all to watch this excellent TED talk by Dr Susan David on the gift and power of emotional courage.
We are socialised in our Western society to embrace positive emotions as we try to suppress, eliminate and harshly judge ourselves for our negative emotions, but all of them are part of our tapestry of being human beings. Furthermore, living a life without suffering or encountering these more painful emotions, is not living our life to the fullest.
Th...is is what Dr David says that really resonated with me: "Though emotions are part of our contract with life. You don’t get to have any meaningful career or raise a family or leave the world a better place without stress and discomfort. Discomfort is the price of admission to a meaningful life”
I would love to hear your thoughts and opinions.

Happy New Year to all of our followers!
I wanted to share this excellent and timely article written by Johann Hari on depression from his personal lived experience and well as from his years of research in different countries interviewing numerous scholars in the field. Johann highlights the importance of moving away from the biomedical rhetoric and taking into account our wider socio-cultural, environmental, political milieu and reflect on our context as a whole.

Wishing all our patients, colleagues and followers a merry Christmas.
During this festive and joyous period of the year, let us also remember that this is a very difficult, isolating and painful time of the year for many others who struggle with their emotional wellbeing.

This is an excellent written article by a GP on trauma-informed care. More medical professionals should be taught this and look beyond the biomedical realm and make more space and time in their consultations to consider the wider socio-cultural and environmental context of a person’s suffering and source of distress.
