The hospital is situated on the A191 in North Shields and is the largest of the Trust's three general hospitals. North Tyneside is a district general hospital with 24 hour walk-in services for urgent care, full range of diagnostic testing, outpatient clinics covering a range of specialties, as well as facilities for care of the elderly. HistoryIt was built between 1984 and 1996 with gradual extensions, and replaced several other hospitals including the Tynemouth Infirmary and Preston Hospital. It is often referred to locally as the Rake Lane Hospital. It serves a population of about 250, 000 in North Tyneside and Northumberland. The hospital's Accident and Emergency Department is now a Urgent Care Centre, following the opening of the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in 2015.
