We had a great time this weekend learning all about harvest mice (including just how cute they are!). Well done to Tom and the Worthing family for finding nests to show us all :) and thank you to Sarah Devon Harvest Mouse project for introducing us to these lovely creatures

The rangers have been making the most of the absence of rain to get this lovely bench by the skern looking smart again with a fresh coat of wood stain. The perfect spot for a bit of birdwatching - we saw a kingfisher while we were working!

The days only get longer from now until midsummer so why not take a walk on Northam Burrows and try our family friendly winter wildlife trail? You can collect a free trail leaflet from the box outside the Burrows centre or download a PDF from our website (link below)

Have you ever wondered what the stray lumps of concrete near Appledore bridge are? North Devon Coast AONB and a lovely group of volunteers gave us a hand yesterday to reveal some of these anchor blocks which are part of the WWII radar array known as RAF Northam. We also put up a new information panel and cut and baled some of the long grass so visitors can explore this unusual feature. (thank you to the Coastal Heritage team for the stunning new info panel and the traditional tools - making mini hay bales is fun!)

User

THANK YOU to all the #volunteers who joined us yesterday to remove lots and lots of barrow loads of bramble from the dunes to make way for delicate wildflowers next spring and a more diverse #habitat

Sunset on sandymere lake. Why would you want to be anywhere else!

It's lovely weather for ducks but these Brent geese might prefer it a little less soggy - they have travelled to Northam Burrows from the Arctic tundra where they raised their chicks and will spend the winter searching the estuary for their favourite food - eelgrass.

Thank you again to Alan Butt for allowing us to share your photos.

#whatwedointhewinter We've been out in cold blustery conditions today cutting an area of Northam Burrows known as the 'inland sea' to help the rare Water Germander to thrive.

User

Recent sightings on Northam Burrows - Both herons and little egrets have distinctive 'S' shaped necks and strike swiftly with their sharp bills when catching their prey. Thank you again to Alan Butt for your beautiful clear photos.

There have been a lot of bird watchers on the Burrows this last week or so and Alan Butt shared these beautiful pictures to show us what they were all so excited about... Snow buntings stopped by to visit us! The skern is a great place to spot interesting birds passing through on their winter migration and also see some of our much loved local birds too. Don't forget your binoculars next time you visit!
