Crikey! More hot weather on the way, with temperatures forecast at 30°C and higher.
Make sure you and your family #Staywell this summer, especially young children and the elderly!
✔️ Try to keep your house cool.... ✔️ Keep your sleeping area well ventilated. ✔️ Drink plenty of fluids, but not alcohol, which dehydrates the body. ✔️ If you have vulnerable neighbours or relatives who may be at risk during a heatwave, try to visit them daily. ✔️ If you do go out, try to avoid the hottest part of the day (11 am to 3 pm) and seek shade where possible. Avoid being in the sun for long stretches. Wear lightweight, light-coloured clothing, high factor sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat.

It's #BiomedicalScienceDay2018! We were lucky enough to be invited by our #TeamNGH lab staff in histopathology for an insight into their day to day operations! 👨‍🔬👩‍🔬
The laboratory receives tissue specimens from all areas of the hospital and GP surgeries. These specimens are dissected and observed macroscopically before being processed, embedded and cut onto microscope slides at microtomy. The sections are then stained with a Haemotoxylin and Eosin stain which stains differe...nt parts of the cell in pinks and purple. There are further staining techniques performed in the specials room.
Immunohiostochemistry uses antibodies to detect antigens within patient samples to aid the diagnosis, prognosis or differentiation of cancers. It can be used to help guide patients treatment. It can also be used to detect other cellular pathogens such as spirochetes.

The founders of the international DAISY Foundation awards programme visited Northampton General Hospital earlier this month to celebrate the first anniversary of the awards.
We were delighted to welcome Mark and Bonnie Barnes and their granddaughter Riley, for a celebration event to mark one year since the awards were launched at NGH.
During the visit a new DAISY hall of fame was unveiled on hospital street to celebrate our DAISY honourees. The unveiling was followed by an af...ternoon tea party with our DAISY honourees and guests.

Shout out to our fantastic security team for taking part in our dementia awareness training programme. The team are often called upon to support our employees in dealing with patients who display aggressive behaviour; sometimes that can be directly linked to their clinical conditions, including dementia. The training was organised to help them understand the effects of dementia so they can respond to patients and support colleagues.

Make sure you're choosing well this summer and that you only attend A&E when your injury or condition is serious or life threatening.
We have seen lots of people this morning who could have been treated or advised by their GP, pharmacist or NHS 111 instead of coming into A&E.
Watch this short video to see when you need to go to A&E and times when other services might be better suited to your needs.

Please only attend A&E if you have a serious or life threatening injury or condition.
This morning we are experiencing a high number of visits from people who could be treated by other NHS services therefore preventing an A&E visit.
If you're unsure of whether you need to come to A&E please seek advice from your pharmacist, GP or NHS 111.

Went last night with my friend who had a fall, bashed head, hip & back. When we got there (about 6.30pm) it was absolutely heaving. We were checked in quickly & efficiently and asked to take a seat. We waited.

Now believe me, I know not all health issues are visible, but a lot of these people did not need to be there, it is not a drop in GP it is an A & E department.

We were then seen at triage, the staff were wonderful, they got my friend assessed and moved on.

My friend had x-rays, a scan, more x-rays (they queried fractures) the treatment she had was exemplary, the staff were amazing but sooooooooo very busy, so many people to see and there are not enough staff to do it.

They were conscientious & professional throughout but kept their compassion & sense of humour throughout.

They were amazing.

Treat the hospital departments and staff as they should be, respect them, they do a marvellous job in really difficult circumstances.

NGH, you have our heartfelt thanks.

Was admitted today to your Endoscopy Ward to have a PEG.

Please thank all the amazing Nurses on this ward but especially:-

Ward Sister Christina, Staff Nurse Bethany & HCA Sian who looked after me and put me at ease as I was extremely anxious. Bethany & Christina were so caring and nothing was far too much trouble for them.

All though Sian did my admission she then was working in a different area, when she came back on to the Ward she made an effort to come over & check on how I was doing after my operation.

You have a fantastic team on the Endoscopy Ward they are a credit to your Hospital, especially as this is an extremely busy Ward.

The midwife I had looking after me during my babies birth is a woman I will never forget. After learning of my Autism and how prone I am to panic attacks, she kept me calm and spoke to me about music, about family, about how well i was doing. When my contractions made me want to give up, she held my hand. She had a smile that made me feel safe in her care. When I was told to push and I didn't think I was doing enough, she reassured me I was. The fear in her eyes when George's heart rate dropped every time I pushed, but yet the calmness in her voice as she told me they may need to operate. I experienced one of the worst panic attacks I've ever had as they rushed me to theatre to save George's life. The whole time she stuck by my side reassuring me everything would be okay. She stood by me as they prepared me for the cesarean, until Will was allowed in, and even then, the entire time I was in theatre, she stood behind Will, reassuring me, calming me until George was out and safe. 11/06/18 19:43 he was born. He didn't cry. I couldn't see him for 10 minutes. She stood and explained how he was okay, how he had lots of hair, how long he was. She even took a photo for me to prove he was alright. She stayed an hour after her shift ended just to make sure I was okay. And i said thankyou a thousand times. I so desperately want to find her, to tell her how much she helped me. How much she stopped me panicking, how I'll never forget what she did. She went beyond her job title for me. I can't remember her name because of the drugs and stress etc. But one day I'll find out. To whoever you were, thankyou.

So having just spent a week in hospital I felt I needed to say THANK YOU. I really can't thank everyone I came into contact with enough, the level of professionalism from when I arrived to when I left I couldn't fault. After phoning 111 and visiting out of hours doctors and he sending me here I just can't say thank you enough. The nurses, health care assistants, porters, cleaners, catering people, doctors, surgeons, theatre team, everyone I met showed and maintained their professionalism throughout with no complaints. Even when we experienced the bad snow nothing ever faltered with some NHS workers having to sleep here or leave earlier or stay later to ensure this continued. I was in a side room for 5 days and then onto the ward and I can't fault anyone at all or the level of care I received.

The few I can name especially is Dan from A&E who was so lovely and genuine who made me laugh through my tears, helped me and ensured I was cared for and then on the ward Creaton (EAU for now) special thanks has to go to HCA Mark who took time for me to talk and listen and cheer me up all while performing his duties (while very busy) professionally too. The two nurses on Creaton too were Katie and Laura their dedication, respect, support and treating everyone as individuals shouldn't go unrecognised. I saw team work above and beyond during my stay which makes me incredibly grateful for you ALL at NGH and for all involved with our NHS. Even people just walking past would take time to smile and say hello. It's amazing. Thank you again to everyone. You are a dedicated, lovely bunch of people and in one word you are ALL hero's.

Our daughter was born here this week, we would like to thank all the nurses on the maternity Day unit for all the support and help in lead up to having our baby, all the nurses on the maternity observation ward, the amazing midwives on labour ward, and the doctors, the nhs always gets bad reviews but I can not fault the staff who have helped us.

Just want to thank the staff who looked after me while I went for general anaesthetic to have my operation. I was so anxious but the staff kept me calm, reassured me, and looked after me at my time at ngh! We are so lucky to have such brilliant staff! Thanks again

Had to take my little girl to out of hours last night and once again NGH we’re excellent. Seen, diagnosed, treated and home within a couple of hours. Couldn’t be more grateful for the piece of mind it gave me and my husband. Thank you Sue and all the other out of hours staff we saw.

Essay alert but you’ve got some amazing members of staff to thank!

Probably not the place to do it but I just wanted to say a massive thank you to Georgia Wellford and Bridget (didn’t get her surname) who has helped to care for my two year old daughter on Disney.

Georgia-I cannot praise her enough!!! She was so lovely polite considerate and caring. She was bending over backwards telling other staff members how she would do all these extra jobs-which seemed a bit boring and not the nicest jobs. She was insisting to help everyone. Georgina instantly got made a fantastic bond with my daughter who was in excruciating pain and even at the best of times can be very funny with strangers. If it wasn’t for her I’m not sure how we would have got through that night! Honestly cannot thank you enough for having such a tremendous member of staff!

Bridget, well...Bridget was so supportive to not only my daughter but also myself when she was having her MRI scans. Bridget ensured my daughter was always being well cared for and so was I. As soon as I had any worries Bridget would explain what was going on with my daughters care and what would happen next. It’s always so hard when you have a sick child but Bridget done an outstanding job ensuring myself and my daughter were extremely well looked after.

Oh and I cannot forget all the play team. What an incredible job they do. They assisted keeping my daughter contented during some blood tests. They made sure we were always having fresh DVDs and toys. They knew my daughter and what she liked and kept myself upbeat when times were hard.

We even had a music therapist hear how distraught my daughter was so she came and tried to settle her down. It helped tremendously. She was still in pain but was settling and it was such a lovely thing to have available for the children.

Thank you Northampton Hospital for having such FANTASTIC members of staff.

As a family who have recently lost our beloved Mother on Mother’s Day we would like to thank all the wonderful staff who looked after not only Mum but us 6 children as well, Collingtree ward enabled us all to be with her until she passed away and provided us with a side room and mattresses, we cannot thank them enough as we were able to stay with Mum and were all with her when she passed away, we will always remember how kind the staff were xx

5 stars for Debbie Deal, Ward Receptionist on Creaton ward. She was shining light for us with excellent communication about what was happening with our daughter last weekend. She was caring and compassionate and in all honesty the only person we met during 6 days on this ward who showed any interest in us or who actually spoke to us.

Nurses came and went shift after shift and never even introduced themselves or acknowledged us. the bed and bay signs telling us the name of our nurse and HCA for the day were only completed on 3 shifts out of the 12 shifts we were there. No one took not even a minute to say hello. Physical care delivered but emotional care and communication sadly lacking overall. We were in an emotional place and really needed the support of a nurse actually asking how we were but nothing. Sad experience overall except for Debbie!

Had a mixed bag of experiences with this hospital since living here. But thought it might be a good idea to bring to attention a small issue yesterday. Took my toddler to out of hours to be seen....he had high temp and what looked like infected chicken pox spots so needed to be seen. Arrived at the time given and they said we need to be seated out of the main waiting room because he is contagious. So the lovely reception lady took us round to a corridor and told us to wait there. After a few mins, someone comes out of a room in that corridor and tells me I can't be there and need to go to the main waiting room. I explained I had been seated here as my son has chicken pox. She still insisted....for confidentiality reasons apparently....I can't be there. Again, I said I'd been sent there (you can't access that corridor without being let in) so maybe she should speak to the people that put us there, that he was contagious and that there were unwell children in the waiting room.....she joked that doesn't matter as they'll get it anyway at some point.

I was taken aback overall. Firstly, I'm not a fan of being spoken to from the other end of a corridor rather than be approached, or being ordered about particularly. But also, no wonder infections spread so fast in hospitals if this is the attitude to contagious conditions. I think everyone knows chicken pox is usually a mild childhood illness with little to no complications. But to some people, it can be fatal. If I had followed her instruction without questioning it, it could have caused trouble for many people waiting in out of hours. Eventually, she actually moved us round to where she thought we ought to be.... which wasn't the main waiting room... and there was clearly a difference of opinion between her and the reception staff about why that particular corridor is off limits. Whatever the reason, she could have approached me better, spoken to colleagues about where to put us rather than keep telling me to go into the main waiting room and putting others at risk and not turned the light off to the corridor with no warning while we were at the other end of it and had to walk through...which saw my toddler almost fall over

After that, she was very nice and chatted to my son. But still....poor show

Not great so far. Arrived for an ENT APPOINTMENT on May 9th at 9.15. I was one of 3 people whose appointments had been cancelled without notice. However, just the Sunday before I’d had a confirmation text to ask if I was still going, to which I replied yes.

After speaking to a Carol who came to see us all, she promised to call me that afternoon. (Still waiting)

The appointments voice mail box is full too. So unable to leave a message.

When I asked who had cancelled the appointment, I was told it would have been the consultant. Deciding who the more important patients are.

I eventually called my drs who were able to help.

Fingers crossed my rescheduled appointment today will still go ahead.

With the experience we have had over the passed 3 weeks with my grandad being in hospital is disgusting.... we live in Corby and my grandad is in Northampton at the moment we do not have a car and we can only get over once a week if that and today we went to visit there was 4 of us and we where sitting there for about 30 minutes and then a member of staff comes over very rudely and told us we have to take it in turns to visit my grandad as the rule is 2 to a bed which is fair enough however she explained its only fair for everyone and as we left the ward I could see other people with more than two to a bed and they haven’t been told to leave .... but that rule obviously hasn’t applied to everyone !!!! Which I think is very rude ! The nurses on the ward just stand around and they don’t go near my grandad what so ever they have moved him to the window so he’s basically out of the way I find it disgusting they are extremely rude on the phone as well very poor

User

Told by consultant that if things don't get better go to A&E get to A&E to be sent to see their onsite doctor (urgent care) been waiting over an hour..... Told the staff in A&E that my consultant had told me to come there they didn't seem to care...m anything to reduce waiting times in the department I guess! Useless if a specialist consultant tells a patient to attend don't send them to a doctor who has no clue !!!!! Oh btw I'm awaiting a surgery date for my issues and should be in A&E not a doctor's waiting room

User

None of the food areas understand what gluten free is!! None of any of them offer it. When I have asked staff they shrug their shoulders and say I don’t know. Very poor service for a hospital considering it’s a medical problem I suggest you need to ensure staff are trained better in your food areas I’ve now gone nearly all day without any food just a bit of fruit which seems all the whole hospital sells that I can guarantee is gluten free !!!

User

My wife has been diagnosed with lymphoma and was transferred to Coventry to begin her treatment, she was then scheduled to be transferred back to northampton where they are going to monitor her before sending her home. First of all when she originally went from northampton to Coventry, the nurses on the talbot butler ward didn’t send her notes despite being asked for them so Coventry didn’t have any of the correct information and then on the transfer back from Coventry, yesterday, they sent the incorrect transport and we are still waiting transfer! These mistakes are keeping my wife from getting home to see our baby daughter which she is desperate to do. I find these kind of mistakes in acceptable and I feel as though you need to realise you’re messing at with peoples lives by being unacceptably Un organised.

User

My precious Dad was admitted to NGH on three occasions by the most wonderful, patient & caring paramedics, we could not fault them at all. If only the same attention to detail and honesty was followed through once we arrived. This all started in April 2016 and finally ended in December 2016 after my dad refused to return to hospital for treatment needed urgently to save his life. He refused because there was no care, no patience, no trust, no honesty, no dignity and he knew if he went back he would die in hospital. He knew he wasn’t going to be saved from something we were promised he would be, so he died at home with all of us around him with all of the care, patience, trust, honesty and dignity he so rightly deserved from the very beginning. I could go into detail of everything that happened over the most heartbreaking 8 months of our lives, but even today May 2018, it still feels as raw as the day my dear Dad was robbed of life, robbed of walking me, his daughter down the isle, robbed of ever meeting his grandchildren, robbed of retirement, robbed of growing old with his wife, my mum. We just hope and pray that no other families have to go through what we did.
