September's walk took us to the fascinating Brimham Rocks in Nidderdale. The weather looked very showery as we approached the National Trust car park. After waiting a few minutes, we put on our waterproofs. Keith came fully prepared with waterproof trousers- well done!
We could see several interesting shaped rocks from the start. It's hard to imagine they were there before dinosaurs roamed the earth! We took the outer path and saw several school children with hard hats, sque...ezing through narrow gaps in the rocks. We continued round the back of the visitor centre. Here we spotted fun rocks such as the Dancing Bear, the Druid's Writing Desk and the Meerkat. Some of us carefully walked to the edge of the hill to see the great view down to Pateley Bridge. We also saw remnants of early summer bilberries and heather amongst the rocks.
By now, it began to rain heavily as we headed for lunch in the comfort of the visitor centre. They provide a picnic area upstairs in the exhibition area for wet weather. From here, we had a great view of the giant golf balls on Menwith Hill, Ferrybridge power station and more giant rock formations. We also liked the old photos showing visitors arriving here by horse and carriage. Martin was able to name all the cars such as, Austin Maxi & Austin 1100 from a 1960s photo.
The rain had now stopped and we had a final meander round rocks named the Flowerpot, Eagle and Blacksmith's Anvil. Despite the mixed weather, everyone had walked well. Well done!

In response to large number of requests please find below a link to the Northdale My Donate page. Once again we are humbled by your many generous offers of help and kind messages of support. No sign of the culprits getting caught yet however we have heard that one of our neighbors also had some items stolen from outbuildings at around the same time so best lock your sheds folks.

User

A massive thank you to everybody who has sent kind messages, offers of help and generous donations following our recent break-in. Its very heartening to know that there is so much goodwill and kindness out there. Thank you 😉

It gives me no pleasure to report that at some point over the last few days somebody has stolen a number of items of horticultural machinery from Northdale. We have lost a STIHL Chain Saw, x2 STIHL Hedge Trimmers, a STIHL High Reach Hedge Trimmer and a Husqvarna Chain Saw. The Equipment was stolen from a building used by our garden contracting team and couldn't have come at a worst time given that we are right in the middle of cutting a number of our customers hedges. If anybody is offered any Horticultural machinery or sees any equipment for sale please note that our postcode DL7 OLQ has been etched into the equipment in a number of places. Our apologise to any of our customers who are inconvenienced by this situation and we hope to resume normal service just as soon as we can replace the stolen equipment.

Our August walk took us to sunny Saltburn and The Valley Gardens. After parking at Cat Nab, we took a stoll down the lovely old pier. The tide was almost in and several surfers were out. There was lots of quirky knitting of book characters such as, Red Riding Hood tied to the railings. At the end of the pier, there were several fishermen fishing for mackerel. Stewart showed interest and was handed a rod to have a go! Walking back along the pier we had a good view of the grand... Victorian seafront apartments and the Cliff Lift, which still seemed to be undergoing renovation. It's one of the world's oldest water powered water funiculars. We followed Skell Beck up through The Valley Gardens where there is a maze of paths to The Italian Gardens and woodland. This would have been a haven for smuggling in the past. On the way we spotted the miniature steam train being prepared for the afternoon runs. We also a heron patiently waiting for fish on the riverbank. We lunched on the seafront overlooking a variety of old tractors and boats. After ice creams, we decided to head inland as the weather was becoming cooler. We stopped at Guisborough Forest and Parkway at Pinchinthorpe where there are numerous paths and a small visitor centre. We followed the sculpture trail with its cleverly carved creatures such as toads, foxes and hares. There's special areas for bug hunting and pond dipping. A few brave souls also had a go on the trim trail monkey bars! It had been a day full of variety.
