Merry Christmas to everyone from Northrace Speedshop, we have been lacking in posts latley due to being so busy in the workshop but we will have some updates and progress reports on some interesting projects we have been hard at work on in the new year!
Next major build is this chassis destined for some fuel altered action and possibly nostalgia funny car. Jigging a partially built chassis to check it's straight then onto some serious welding before starting on motor plates and rear axle.
A bit of tube work and and engine and transmission raise to help keep the engine and gearbox from moving around in this big power turbo and nitrous street legal beetle belonging to David Swift. Tin work to follow shortly.
What came in as a full nearly stock car with a 4 link, cage and a rusty floor. Full new Ali interior and floor with new steel firewall, strut front end and tubular cromolly K member and now sporting and engine and trans. Off for completion by its owner :-)
Well after lots of little jobs you don't see it was firewall time! Engine mounted and steel firewall in place. Starting to look like a car again! It looks flat and is hard to see in the pictures but the motor plate is about 2 inches behind the original firewall so it all tapers back in towards the motor plate meaning it had to be made from several pieces.
Two tanks for two engines!
It's been all aluminium this week!
The end of one job with the nose and body finally finished on the audi rail and now onto the tin work in the Banzai Cobra. Lots of fiddly small panels and awkward shapes but starting to look good with some pieces just mocked in place. All flush mounting on our own Laser cut tabs.
After seeing and hearing a few horror stories about cages and welding here are some of ours done properly with proper fitting tubes and also a weld etch macro test we had carried out on a TIG weld. It has to be right and we know it is! No hiding behind big dollops of mig weld to fill the gaps in here. All our cages and chassis are fully TIG welded to high standards.
A batch of CNC Ali escort/capri hubs ready for drilling.
It's been a busy time the past few months. Working hard on all those little jobs that don't get seen! Five racecars on the go in the workshop, there is even one hiding behind the tool chest! There are several more cars due in soon for more work as well as some custom parts for some other well known racers so watch out for some updates and and also a very exciting project comimg soon. We now have the parts for a nostalgia fuel funny car starting to arrive with an axle now in our hands previously from a pro mod for some modification and tidying before we can use it to get started on the chassis build! Hopefully with a few jobs clear and a good sort out we can get back to having a bit more free space in the workshop once again!
A bit more fabrication work on the Banzai Cobra
Taking orders for custom Ali tanks
A twin stainless system to customers spec for this Evo based Mk1 escort destined for some racetrack use.
And the next tank in the queue is for Dave Rudd's Banzai!!
A little tank complete with in tank RS500 fuel pump
What started as a little bit of tin work on back halved car and a few small bits and bobs progressed into removing the factory floors, bulkhead and the front suspension to replace with struts and fitting motor plates and make new Ali floors and firewall, door cards, boot floor and numerous other jobs. However the scrap pile is a lot heavier than the new parts going back in its place! With 500ci of mopar power is it light enough to reach the end goal however??
