Visiting 13 European countries in 2 weeks would be a challenge in itself, so imagine doing it by bike! That’s exactly what superstar fundraiser Gary Clark is doing right now!
Gary is taking part in the Transcontinental Race, an ultra-distance bike race across Europe, covering around 2,500 miles in just 2 weeks! The clock never stops and riders have to find their own supplies and navigate between route checkpoints. Gary will be cycling anywhere up to 200 miles per day, up moun...tains and across gravel/unpaved roads. This is truly the challenge of a lifetime!
Gary is taking part in the challenge to raise money for the Adult Intensive Care Unit at the Queen’s Medical Centre, to say thank you for the care his brother Joe has received after suffering a serious stroke. All of us at Nottingham Hospitals Charity are in awe of Gary, and so grateful for his fundraising! We’d like to wish Gary all the luck for the remainder of his challenge, and Joe the very best for his road to recovery.
To support Gary’s amazing challenge you can sponsor him on Just Giving via the link below.

The British Transplant Games kicks off today in Birmingham! Darren and Sandra Calow have supported the Games for years, raising money through their family business DC Training & Development Services Ltd. This year, they raised over £15,300 to pay for 20 renal transplant patients from Nottingham Children's Hospital, and their families, to attend the Games!
Darren and Sandra have a special connection to both Nottingham Children's Hospital and the Transplant Games. Their son, Da...niel, suffered a major trauma at birth, leading to end-stage kidney failure. In November 2014, a suitable kidney donor was found and Daniel received his transplant at Nottingham Children’s Hospital. In 2016, when he was nine, he attended his first British Transplant Games and won two medals!🏅🏅
Darren, Daniel's dad, said last year: “The Transplant Games are so important. They are a celebration of the gift of life, of the wonderful donors and the athletes able to compete without the handicaps that organ failure hinders them with. There are many Daniels out there and these games celebrate all of them.”
We're so grateful to DC Training and the Calow family for their continued support of Nottingham Children's Hospital (the photo shows the Calows with the Big Appeal Wall of Fame after their donation of £13k last year!). Their generosity has made such a difference to so many children who, like Daniel, have received organ transplants. We can't wait to hear about Nottingham Children's Hospital's medal tally in this year's Transplant Games! 💞

NEW ON THE BLOG 📣 Earlier this month, three colleagues from ITHealth hopped on their bikes and cycled 216 miles from Trafford General Hospital, the birthplace of the NHS, to Oxfordshire. They raised over £6,000 for Hayward House, the palliative care unit at City Hospital - a brilliant place which provides activities and complementary therapies for patients with life-limiting illnesses. The money raised by ITHealth will help patients and families during the most difficult times of their lives 💞

We want to say a huge thank you and a massive well done to Cavan and his team at UK Mail for completing their walk across the Yorkshire Three Peaks on 21st July! They've raised over £500 for the Big Appeal so far and we couldn't be more grateful.
The team decided to take up the challenge because a young boy aged just 2 years old, who is very close to their hearts, is currently being treated at Nottingham Children's Hospital for a brain tumour. The money raised by the UK Mail team will help us purchase a new state-of-the-art intra-operative MRI (iMRI) machine, which will help paediatric brain surgeons treat other children with brain cancer.
Thank you so much to everyone that took part and helped raise money for such an important cause! 💞 Find out more about our Big iMRI Appeal: https://www.nottinghamhospitalscharity.or g.uk/…/the-big-ap…/

This week we had the privilege of meeting the wonderful folks from The Willow Tree who have raised £1200 for City Hospital Clinical Haematology & Cancer Wards. The staff held a charity night in their pub, which included Mandi & Kev shaving off their hair!
✨The inspiration behind The Willow Tree's fundraising is a really special one, and is also very close to the hearts of our Charity Team. The Willow Tree generously decided to fundraise in loving memory of their colleague, Lo...raine Morley, who sadly passed away earlier this year. Loraine was not only a much-loved and dearly missed employee at The Willow Tree, but also the sister-in-law of our Charity Assistant, Karen Morley. ❤️
Loraine was cared for on various wards throughout City Hospital, and in particular the Clinical Haematology Unit, after she was diagnosed with Leukaemia in 2016. 🎗️ Karen says that Loraine fought "with courage and determination" while maintaining her "jolly" and "cheery" personality throughout, before she sadly lost her battle in May this year.
It was a really special moment to see Karen and The Willow Tree staff come together this week to celebrate Loraine's life and their fundraising in her memory.
Over £1100 had already been raised in Loraine's memory by her family and friends. The Willow Tree's recent fundraising makes it a grand total of over £2300! The fact that so many people chose to give generously in Loraine's memory proves that she was a truly wonderful lady, and will be greatly missed.
The Willow Tree's fundraising will be used for the benefit cancer patients in our region, many of whom spend weeks or months at a time receiving treatment in hospital. We're so touched by this beautiful tribute to Loraine's memory and want to thank everyone at The Willow Tree for their mighty fundraising achievement! 🌳💕

Staff from Barclay Ward have been channelling their inner Mary Berry to raise money for Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. With incredible chocolate cakes, brookies, banana bread and even a nurses uniform cake, the judges (Deputy Chief Nurse, Ann Marie Riley and Fundraiser, Alison) had a really tough decision to make.
🥇First prize – carrot cake made by Emily 🥈Second prize - nurses uniform made by Claire 🥉Third prize - ombre lemon cake
... All the cakes were delicious - NUH Staff really are a talented bunch! 👨‍🍳
Through cake sales and their fabulous raffle the Shared Governance Team on Barclay Ward have already raised over £150. All of the money raised will be added to Barclay Ward's Challenge 1000 target, where teams are challenged to raise £1,000 for their ward or area to make a difference for their patients.

Earlier this this year, Charlie Waterfield had an accident at work. His injuries were severe, and Major Trauma surgeons made the difficult decision to amputate his left arm. Despite this, Charlie has made a spectacular recovery.
Charlie's colleagues at British Gypsum Barrow Upon Soar, with their friends and family, all decided to use their 11th annual bike ride from Barrow to Skegness to honour Charlie's recovery and the Major Trauma Centre team at Nottingham University Hosp...itals NHS Trust who returned their dear friend to good health.
107 people took part in the 100-mile cycle ride. Collectively, they raised an absolutely phenomenal sum for the Major Trauma Centre at QMC: £19,390, which will help Major Trauma staff care for people, like Charlie, who are admitted to hospital after tragic accidents. Sandy and Wendy from Major Trauma were delighted to accept on behalf of their team.
We're so incredibly grateful to each an every person who rode their bikes for Charlie, and to everyone who chose to sponsor them. You're all amazing - THANK YOU ✨

Read about how Dan Wakelin overcame the effects of a stroke aged just 12, went on to win TWO MEDALS for GB at the Dragon Boat World Championships two weeks after being discharged, and even found time to raise money for our Big Appeal to thank the Children's Hospital staff who helped make him better! What an incredible young man 🏅🏅

This week we met with the family and friends of Adnan Ahmed to receive a cheque for £1531.41!
❤️ Adnan tragically passed away at just 14 yrs old in 2016, and since then his family and friends have fundraised in his memory. Adnan was cared for by the wonderful staff on the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, and it was really special to see his family reunited with them this week to celebrate their fundraising.
Adnan's family held their charity football match this year to fundra...ise for the Big iMRI Appeal for Nottingham Children's Hospital. They were fully kitted out in their bespoke football kits, with personalised chocolates, banners, photographs and so much more! ⚽ It was really amazing to hear how Adnan's whole community have worked together to hold this event in loving memory of him.
We've been so touched by the generosity of this family, who not only worked so hard to pull off such a fantastic event, but who came to meet us bearing many gifts (🎂 including a giant chocolate cake!!) just out of the kindness of their hearts and overwhelming gratitude for the care that their family have received!
Their generosity has brought a smile to the faces of the TeamNUH staff who cared for Adnan, and will also impact the lives of thousands of children who come to Nottingham Children's Hospital. The new state-of-the-art iMRI scanner will enable our Paediatric Neurosurgeons to diagnose children's brain tumours and neurological conditions more accurately and in a less invasive manner.
The hope of a life-changing machine like this really wouldn't be possible without families like Adnan's.
Their generous gift toward the Big iMRI Appeal is such a beautiful tribute to Adnan's life, and a wonderful way to honour his memory. ✨
Thank you so much to all those involved. What a family!

I like to help a charity. The one close to my heart is breast cancer. I do a stall which people come back time and time again. We have been talk about across both hospitals. Come and have a lot yourself. I love helping others. There are great people in the charity department and made me feel welcome every time I pop in.
