Nuffield College

About Nuffield College

Nuffield College is a graduate college of the University of Oxford specialising in the social sciences.

Nuffield College Description

Nuffield College was founded at the University of Oxford in 1937 to advance postgraduate education and research in the social sciences. The College provides a stimulating research-orientated environment for postgraduate students (about 75 in number) and faculty (approximately 60 academic fellows of the College). Nuffield has been open to both men and women since its foundation and was the first college in Oxford or Cambridge to have that character.

In accordance with the wishes of Lord Nuffield the buildings and layout are in the traditional style of Oxford Colleges. The Foundation Stone (on the right of the entrance to Staircase C) was laid on 21 April 1949 by the late Earl of Halifax, then Chancellor of the University. The first meal in the Hall was served on 6 June 1958 when the Royal Charter was presented by the Duke of Edinburgh.

Today we wished Gwilym Hughes, the CollegeŌĆÖs Head of Endowment, a very fond farewell.
Gwilym retires today after nearly 23 years at Nuffield. Some of you may remember him from the 18 years he spent as the CollegeŌĆÖs Bursar from 1996 to 2015.
ItŌĆÖs fair to say that our kitchen team outdid themselves with this croquembouche...

Today is an important day in Parliament, with indicative voting on Brexit starting soon. How MPs will vote is as important as what they will vote for.

This time last year we had 'The Beast from the East', but this week we were basking in the sunshine with record-breaking winter temperatures! What a contrast to the more-usual February weather we had at the beginning of the month...
While we cannot attribute specific weather events to climate change, we might expect these extreme events to occur with a changing climate. The Climate Econometrics team, based here at Nuffield, is trying to understand the impact of human activity... on climate change and vice versa using econometrics.

Today is Nuffield's Giving Day, and it's great to see so much philanthropy happening around the College...!
As we speak, our student callers are on the phones to Nuffield alumni about our student funding campaign, and staff and Fellows have come together with their families to raise money for BBC Children in Need in the Buttery.
Our student callers will be manning the phones late into the night. To meet them and to find out more about Nuffield Giving Day, visit www.nuffield.ox.ac.uk/go/givingday.

We can't wait to say 'hi'!
Our student volunteers will be calling alumni and friends of Nuffield on Friday 16 November - the 81st anniversary of the College's foundation. They can't wait to say hello, to share College news and to encourage you all to support our student funding campaign. We'll be introducing some of them over the next few days.
In the meantime, find out more about Giving Day 2018 at www.nuffield.ox.ac.uk/go/givingday or donate to our student funding campaign at www.campaign.ox.ac.uk/nuffield-college.
