The Nunsmoor Centre is a community building housing Newcastle City Council Services and working in partnership with Nunsmoor Centre Trust.

Nunsmoor Centre Description

The Nunsmoor Centre was established in 2006 through funding from the European Regional Development Fund, New Deal, Newcastle City Council and Sure Start.

The centre works in partnership with Nunsmoor Centre Trust, Newcastle City Council, Healthworks Newcastle, Health Visitors, Occupational Therapists, Greening Wingrove and Ashfield Nursery

Services provided at the centre are:

• Sure Start Community Family Hub West activities for families with children under 5yrs

Sure Start West
Nunsmoor Centre is part of the Sure Start West Community Family Hub for children aged under five years and their families living in the West End of Newcastle. Skilled staff are on hand to give information on:

• Health issues for you and your child
• Parenting and family support
• A range of groups and activities to enjoy
• Jobs and Training
• Places to meet other parents and carers
• Nutrition

Nunsmoor Centre Trust

Nunsmoor Centre Trust is a Registered Charity Number: 1145020 and a Company Limited by Guarantee Number: 07928591. It was established in 2011. Its aim is to enhance the work of the centre by promoting the benefit of children, young people and families. It does this by advancing education, protecting and preserving health and relieving the effects of poverty. It provides facilities for recreation and leisure time. It works to promote, support and improve the Nunsmoor Centre.

Trust membership is made up of local community activists and interested persons. It includes a local councillor. The Trust welcomes expressions of interest regarding membership. It is also looking for volunteers to help with activities and events and welcomes enquiries.

The Trust undertakes consultation with the community which helps to shape its work. We are currently looking for people who would be interested in being part of a Focus Group and who would be prepared to share their ideas with the Trust.

To help provide a wide range of activities and events the Trust works in partnership with other organisations and agencies. Our activities include:

• English Conversation Classes 1. 30 – 3. 00pm on Thursday and Friday with crèche provision for the Friday Class. These classes are run in conjunction with NUSU Go Volunteer.
• Parent and Toddler Group 9. 30 – 11. 30am on Thursdays during term time with Toy Library provision.
• Arts and Crafts Group 4. 00 – 5. 30pm every Friday afternoon. This group is for children aged 8 – 12 years of age and is run in conjunction with NUSU Go Volunteer.
• We provide various Events, Festivals and Projects during the year for the community which are advertised in advance
• The Trust manages the Access Fund on behalf of Newcastle City Council for children with additional needs and disabilities

Welfare Rights
Newcastle Welfare Rights Service hold a weekly drop in at Nunsmoor Centre on a Wednesday, 9: 30am to 12: 00.

Nunsmoor Centre Trust Toddler Group
A weekly term time session on Thursdays, 9: 30 to 11: 30am. For parents /carers with babies and toddlers to play and learn together.

Al-Ihsan Toddler Group (Women Only)
A weekly term time session on a Friday, 10: 00 to 12: 00 and is for parents /carers with babies and toddlers to play and learn together.

WEA Yoga
Monday evenings, 6: 30 to 7: 30pm. Fees apply dependant on household income. Please ring Anne on 2723750 for more information.

BBJA Judo

Nunsmoor Centre Trust Access Fund

The Access Fund is
• Made available through Newcastle City Council’s Children’s Social Care to promote wider access to short breaks for disabled children and young people throughout the city.
• Giving disabled children the opportunity to take part in mainstream activities in their local communities alongside their non disabled peers.
• Helping to identify and breach any barriers to participation for disabled children within their local communities.
• Increases inclusion opportunities for disabled children and young people locally.

The Access Fund is open to any child or young person living in Newcastle aged from birth up to their eighteenth birthday and in receipt of one of the following:
• In receipt of middle or higher rate of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
• Subject to a Statement of Special Educational Needs or EHC Plan
• On the Newcastle Disabled Children’s Register

Grants up to a maximum of £500 can be applied for. Full details and application forms are available from Nunsmoor Centre on 0191 2261006 or nunsmoorcentre@newcastle. gov. uk

The Access Panel can also Award grants of up to £500 to organisations to:
1. Enable them to provide young people or children with additional needs to access the activities which they provide or;
2. Alternatively if they are a group who work with children, or young people, with a disability the funding would enable the organisation to access additional activities /outings /opportunities for the children or young people with whom they work.

Come along and meet your local councillor on the last Saturday of each month, 10: 00 to 11: 00am.

Go Digital Wifi and Public Access Computers
In Nunsmoor Centre Reception we have 2 public access computers, they are available for use by adults, Monday to Friday, 9: 30am until 4: 00pm.
The maximum time slot per user is 30 minutes.
