Have you heard of the "BARF" diet for dogs and cats?
(biologically Appropriate Raw Food)
Dogs have been eating processed food for about 100 years and for the previous 300, 000 they were eating a natural diet involving raw bones, meat, fruit and vegetables. Dogs have evolved to eat this diet, so why feed them anything else?
They are more healthy and suffer less from common modern diseases such as chronic colitis, atropy and peridontal disease on this diet.
NEVER EVER FEED COOKED BONES!
The Beginning
At the age of seven, Fred, my big red boxer, developed a cancerous skin tumour (Mast Cell) which was surgically removed. The following year a needle aspiration on another lump confirmed that he had another Mast Cell Tumour which had infiltrated a large fatty lump on the inside of his hind leg. The surgery required to remove this one proved much more difficult. We were very lucky to have two excellent veterinary surgeons who worked together and successfully removed the tumour but they were unfortunately not able to leave a safe margin on one side. He faced a long recovery . The wound could not be stitched closed due to the vast area of skin that had been lost. It would have to granulate over.
Prior to the second tumour I had become increasingly aware of the bad effects some refined carbohydrates and sugars could have in a dogs' diet, possibly causing cancers and supporting their growth. A couple of leading dog food manufacturers had produced cancer patient support diets which were low carbohydrate and high protein. For the period of his recovery I put Fred on one of them.
Nearly three months later and Fred had completed his difficult convalescence but he had become an old man. My tigger had lost his bounce. He needed help getting into the car. He didn't run - he plodded. He didn't want to play, thank you.
I was unable to find a viable alternative so kept Fred on the same diet. I had become terrified of the possible consequences of carbohydrates.
My other dogs showed no signs of Fred's problem so they were still having a good quality kibble. I did not know what else to do.
I worked as a receptionist and assistant at a veterinary practice during this time. (for a total of nine years)
The following year we had another locum vet join us but he proved to be a bit out of the ordinary.
He was into complementary "stuff"!
One of the things that he recommended to a number of his patients, almost ( it seemed) regardless of their problem was a raw food diet.
In my ignorance I found this faintly amusing, ( I had never heard of this before) but as time went on and his patients made good recoveries, I became more interested and eventually asked him to explain his 'raw diet' to me.
Basically
1 /3rd meat
1 /3rd vegetable
1 /3rd oat
But most important of all as far as I was concerned - carbohydrates were not essential, I could leave the oats out if I wanted too.
One month later, I introduced raw food to my dogs.

We were lucky enough to win 24kg of your chicken mince. Òran MacSporran our retriever collie cross and the cat looked like all their Christmases had come at once. They've been on complete raw til now, so this will be a new endeavour for them but the quality looks good and the delivery was great and kept us informed. Only slight issue is there were some leaky bags but otherwise very happy.
Very knowledgeable and helpful staff, our dog loves their selection of ffod and treats.
Took my 9 week staffy Reggie In today to meet the girls and get set up to start raw. They took the time to thoroughly explain everything to me and I went away clued up and with a bag full of food for the week for just over £3! Happy days ��
Three weeks ago I changed my 14 year old westie over to a raw diet as the vet recommended more fish in his diet would help his skin to stay scab free, not only does his skin & coat look amazing but he has a new lease of life, more energy, he plays ball again & has had no acid indigestion! I wish I’d changed over sooner, the difference is incredible!!
The food is great quality for money (I just wish we had started or puppy on it sooner!). The staff in the shop go above and beyond to make the service the best! We even brought our very nervous puppy into the store yesterday and they couldn't have been more understanding or helpful. I went away with one happy pup and mummy! I can't thank them enough for their guidance.
Thank you for being so accommodating today when technically you had just closed. Our Westie is absolutely thriving on your raw. Would highly recommend you!
Received my prize today and my 3 dogs and cat love it. I struggle with complete which has veg in as one of my Daxies has allergies. This is a great texture. Thank you.

Nurturing by nature is excellent with friendly good advice, a large range of different products and always a treat at the till for your dog. I love how there is a big selection to choose from and I love going there to decide what my dog will have next! The variety boxes are always a good bargain. I’m so happy I have this on my doorstep :)

Harry the bony boy who came to see you in the shop gained over a kilo in weight within 10 days of raw feeding, his coat is less coarse, and he has got his mojo back in general as well as the competition ring. Thanks for your understanding and advice on how to easily make the switch. Now the cats are queueing up for raw too! The next stage for us is chicken carcass...have just placed an order for 40 carcasses, and chicken necks. Thanks again. #ifeedraw

Fantastic customer service, if there is a problem - and there can be with any service industry - they go above and beyond to rectify. For which we appreciate. No need to tell you how much my two love the food - they are also the shiniest black dogs in the New Forest apparently ��
Been coming here since December - great quality food for our puppy and lots of choice. Also great that you can get advice from the mum of the owner as she was a veterinary nurse ! Definitely recommend.
I would like to give this food 5 stars as my dog absolutely LOVES it, but the plastic containers are a real problem, that could potentially result in a law suit. They frequently arrive at my pet store smashed up (the plastic becomes brittle when frozen), so I have to carefully pick out the very sharp shards prior to feeding my dog, as they are a serious choking hazard. On a couple of occasions blood has leaked out inside my fridge whilst defrosting, so I now double up the containers. New Forest Council do not recycle these tubs, so they end up in landfill, which sits very heavy on my conscience. There are much more user/environmentally friendly packaging solutions out there, which I hope the company look into very soon.
I have used NBN since I first started raw feeding 5 years ago, but I have been quite disappointed to find that although the quality of cuts of chicken carcass (bulk buy) has gone down, the price has gone up by 30p a kg. Where I used to get a whole meaty carcass with back, and lots of skin I now get, half of a carcass, with no back and wings here and there. Working out more bone to meat, yet the price is higher. I was also disappointed in that I placed an order of chicken and duck carcasses, and was called to be told duck wouldn't be in until the following week, so I waited a week and went to collect my order, but was then told the duck hadn't been delivered. I would have rather waited another week or so to collect both. On a positive, most of the staff are brilliant, Emma especially has always been very helpful!
But sadly I won't be rushing back anytime soon.
