A gem hidden in the valley, a proper hikers bar serves real ale. Ideal after a hard day up the hills.

We didn't stay but walked from the hotel. They have a little car park where it is £3 to park all day which is donated to the air ambulance (mountain rescue) great charity and its cheaper than the national trust car park. The pub is really traditional but great selection of beers. The food looked good and the hotel looked nice as well.

Lovely pub with good food & beer. Service can be a bit slow on occasion. Fantastic location.

Awful. We were camping at Great Langdale which is fabulous, 4 adults and 4 children. We decided to have breakfast at the Old Dungeon Ghyll on the day we were leaving. Whilst we packed up the kit, my friend walked over to the pub to check availability and was told that despite being full, they would serve us coffee and breakfast around 9.15am provided we didn't mind waiting, great! So we walked 4 children, the youngest is 3, over to the pub for 9.15am only to be greeted by possibly the rudest person I've met in a long time (something which is unusual to the Lakes I have to say) who blankly said "we're full, we can't serve you, I can't ask residents to move". If she'd added "go away" I wouldn't have been shocked. My friend explained to this person that less than 20 minutes ago she'd actually spoken to her (?!) and she'd said that we could have breakfast if we waited, we didn't expect anyone to be "moved" and were happy to wait. This person then said she'd speak to the chef and disappeared. Minutes passed and passed and eventually we rang the bell. She re-appeared "yes?". Sorry, I said, we're waiting for you to come back to us about serving us breakfast? She replied that they were full, she wasn't going to ask guests to move and she had "no idea what we wanted her to say or do". Well, here's an idea, lass: don't make promises you have no intention of keeping and which leave people (including a 3 year old) in the lurch, be polite, be nice and put a smile on your face, you are, after all running a business. What an unhelpful rude person she was for absolutely no reason whatsoever and what a shame to have left us with such a bad impression of a lovely pub in a lovely setting. We eventually went to the New Dungeon Ghyll and had a feast.

Rooms were clean and comfortable. Staff were all extremely friendly. Breakfast was fantastic and the walkers packed lunches are awesome! The sandwiches are massive. A great base for walking

Excellent location. Spacious garden area. Quite a tourist trap though, i.e. busy and lacking a little something.

Old style basic bar. Situated in a great walking area, very popular with walkers and a nice beer garden. Great selection of ales and a superb local lager from Hawkshead brewery, reasonably priced for the lake district. Food was fresh and very good, homemade chips.
