Onca Barge At Brighton Marina Description

The Barge at Brighton Marina is a non-profit community and youth hub available to hire at reasonable rates.

Originally built in 1921 and named the Selby Virgo, she was a Humber barge that took grain up and down the waterways of the north of England. In the late 20th century she was converted into a floating Chinese restaurant called The Pagoda and found her home at Brighton Marina. In 2016 her then owner decided to sell the boat. Rather than scrap her, the Marina owners decided to take the opportunity to turn her into a non-profit space for communities within the Marina as well as across the city and beyond.

She now has over 3, 500 square feet that can be used to support community, youth, art and cultural projects. We have tried to make her as sustainable as possible: recycling some of the wood and other fixtures and fittings, installing solar lighting, sourcing environmentally-friendly materials (such as cork, chipboard and even recycled cutting boards that are now many of our tables and our bar), and employing many local designers and labour in the process.
